Class History First Grade ln September 1938, thirty-two members of the class of fifty were greeted by Miss Wurster and Miss Shedan as they began the first of twelve long years. Those years have really flown by-just ask any of these veterans: Linda Davis, Shirley Ad- ams, Barbara Glenn, Carolyn Glenn, Susie Keeley, Bill Egel, Dave Hall, lean Ann Lowry, Chiquita Price, Ioan Tyler, Andrea Rose, Diane Smith, Nancy Watts, Diana Sims, Anita Smith, Elizabeth Blauser, George DeLong, Herb Horn, Anne Saville, Sarah Clapp, Ieanne Croy, Mary Ann Iohnson, Nina Weigel, Elaine Fallon, Dave Shafer, Dorothy Mont- gomery, Ronnie Green, Tracy Hager, lean Ann Shepard, Marie Cipriano, Mariana Gosnell, and Ioyce Sandbo. Some being too young to know better were over- joyed at having reached that golden age of school days after being told by older sisters and brothers of its wondersK?J. Others had to be cajoled and pampered so that the room could be cleared of the numerous doting mamas. The theatrical world was set back about twenty years when the entire first grade staged The Nut- cracker Suite with an added attraction of The Tailor and the Bear. Also featured was the per- formance of Wurster's Wiggling Rhythm Band. Second Grade Second grade found us gleefully shouting First grade baby, dipped in gravy at our unfortunate underclassmen. This was the year of the impres- sive Crusade to the new Barrington Road Build- ing. With as much dignity as possible, we labor- iously wrote our names on the scroll that went into the cornerstone. Miss Sweyer's room built a little town and all incorrigible citizens were banned to the workroom to cogitate upon their wrong doings. Third Grade By third grade, the newness of our surroundings had worn off and we got down to the serious busi- ness of mastering the more difficult phases of readin', ritin', and 'rithmetic. We turned our cre- ative talents to woodworking. Any number of handy household articles completely baffled our ever-lovin' parents as to what, where, and how am I going to use it? It was in the third grade that we ventured down to Borden's plant. Tracy and George were more interested in the samples than the amazing process. Fourth Grade In the fourth grade, two sections were privileged to get back into the big building. What's that saying about the grass being greener? Remember that airport that Miss Gillilan's room built? The Safety Council was organized that year and the members were permitted to wear huge name badges. Mr. Henry's class spent a lot of time star- gazing Call in the line of studying astronomy, of coursel. I doubt if any of the girls can still do Cinderella or Mabel, Mabel, set the table with all of their younger alacrityp but the boys have brushed up quite a bit on their game of football since those Barrington Road contests. F iith Grade ln fifth grade we busied ourselves with the study of different countries. We built an Eskimo village which was complete down to clay igloos and ivory flakes snow. We had a shadow play that depicted life in the jungle. Our musical edu- cation was enhanced by the choir in Miss Schneid- er's room. When Ioe l..eFever brought a human brain to school, we got our first taste of medical knowledge, much to the dismay of the fair sex. Sixth Grade At last We reached our final year in elementary school. We studied immigration into the United States and the distribution of foreign peoples in our country. Our dramatic talents were soon brought to light in the Chinese plays presented by Miss Crist's room and that marvelous singing pro- duction, The Fiesta . This work of art was pre- sented before the whole elementary school and featured such personalities as Nina Weigel, Linda Davis, and Don Maloney. Our life was not taken up completely by our school activities, and in our free hours we entered Miss Symons' dancing classes. Seventh Grade When seventh grade came around, we realized how little we really knew. We started taking such subjects as science, math, English, and history. The girls in the class joined the junior choir and spent most of their Saturday mornings down at the church practicing. Sunday nights found us at Brownlee and those after Brownlee get-togethers. The boys got interested in the ninth grade foot- ball team. Some of the stars were Tracy Hager, Chapin Nolan, Pete Edwards and George Triffon. Eighth Grade Bill O'Neil was president of the eighth grade and was assisted by such able-bodied classmates as Chapin Nolan, vice-president: Susie Keeley, sec- retaryp and George Triffon, treasurer. Can we ever forget those dances after the games where the girls stood in one corner and the boys in another? Of course, the girls went stag, and what talk there was when some brave lad would ask for a dancel None of us can ever forget Mr. Lease's health science classes or those famous debates we held. Ninth Grade Green, lanky, and scared, we found ourselves suddenly pushed into the hectic life of high school. We got our first taste of algebra, and drove our families to distraction with puella est pulcra , como esta usted? , and parlez-vous francais? . Mr. Heischman's general science classes had us scared to death, but we loved them just the same. All studies aside, can we ever forget our Heart- beat or following the basketball team to Dayton? That was the year we lost lim Raths, Chapin Nolan, and Bill O'Neil. In exchange for them we got Ieanne Walker, Penny Clemens, and Bob Wilson. Our able officers for that year were lim Raths, president: George DeLong, vice-president: Sarah Clapp, secretary: and Bill O'Neil, treasurer. iContinued on Page 1l5l Page Twenty-:even
