We breathlessly started our education with some of our more bashful classmates behind pianos and under desks. Our first home- work assignment consisted of what might be termed surrealist drawings, at least no one understood them. But our early life was not all work. One of our first activities was the formation of a first grade band featuring cymbals, tambourines, and castanets. Aside from these bizarre instruments, there was the triangle section for those of us with little or no talent. At regular intervals we were permitted to strike one note on our triangle. The members of our graduation class who started here at Arlington were as follows: Eleanor Maynard, Phyllis Allen, Cay Belcher, Eleanor DeLong, Joanne Beckman, Alice Barcroft, Marjorie Setzer, Nancy Sanor, Dorothy Spetnagel, Dave Sherman, Bill Winders, Bill Clapp, Bob Repine, Barbara Clinger, Paula Williams, Bobby Jean Loveless, Beth Bennett, Ann Hamilton, Alex Cecil, Bill Sutton, John Burneson, Don Quilligan, Roger Nelson, Joyce Lucke, lim Roberts, Dick Blower, Ben Hadley, Cay Thomas, Jean Youngquist, Jack Youngquist, Jim Barnes, Chuck Everson, Larry Creathouse, Andy Iohnson, Dick Royce, Dick Cingher, Frank Starr, Polly Heier, Nancy Rickett, Emily Eckelberry, Dave Stewart, and Mary Ruth Weigel. Moving on to the second grade, we looked back with scorn on the juvenile antics of the new Hrst grade class. In the middle of the year we rolled up our knee socks, hoisted our chairs on our shoulders, and, braving the icy weather, evacuated the wooden barracks for the big high school. Iimmy Barnes was generally thought to be the best dresser of our class. His wardrobe featured sharp brown corduroy knickers and high top boots. Phyllis Allen also deserves some mention with her multi- colored striped knee socks, flowered dresses, and plaid hairbows. The third grade witnessed the musical pageant to end all musical pageants- The Pied Piper of Hamlin, complete with kiddies dancing the Big Apple in mouse suits. In the fourth grade we found that our moving days were not over. This time we all migrated to the beautiful new elementary school on Barrington Road. It was a most important event when we got to have our names put in the corner-stone. Everyone worked for weeks perfecting his signature. After all, some descendant a thousand years hence would dig up our corner-stone, and it would be more than embarrassing to have a blot of ink after your name! At the end of this year we all carried home clay ashtrays, vases and animals with which to decorate our living rooms, much to the dismay of our parents, who would tactfully suggest that they would look much better in the basement or garage. In the fifth grade Miss Clarabelle Pooleis homeroom, a miniature Beulah Park, was the scene of many wild bets as to who would finish his subtraction problems first. The odds were lowest on Bill Clapp, Alex Cecil, and Chuck Everson. However, our artistic talents were not forgotten, for after a hard morning studying about George Washington, we were sufficiently inspired to climb to the third Hoor to dance the minuet for Miss Blake. In the sixth grade signs of definite maturity began to appear, but many budding romances were discouraged by the police, who were opposed to riding double on bicycles. Since this was the first year of the war, winter snow caused many of our class to entrench themselves behind the bicycle racks for snowball skirmishes, along with the usual sledding in the gorges of the Scioto Colf Course. Arriving in the seventh grade, we were heartbroken about having no more recesses, but we were compensated by the exercise we got rushing from one class to another. This year we also had a wide choice of electives, namely-music and art. Many rivals for Betty Crable were discovered when warmer weather forced a number of lads to doff their long woolies for short pants. Besides our grades, in our eighth school year we also had three other FSU-fringed scarves, Frank Sinatra, and football. As this year finally came to an end, we looked forward with leering anticipation to the days when we would be big shots in high school. As we began our long careers as upper classmen, many of us began to plan extended vacations to ancient Rome, Mexico City, and Paris in order to practice our newly-acquired knowledge of foreign languages. One of the most exciting events of the year came when the freshman girls' chorus, in- spired by patriotic ambitions, tramped through acres of snowdrifts to Lockbourne Army Air Base to present a program of Christmas carols. This year also marked our first entrance into vaudeville since many of us participated in Krazy Kapersf' We were led through this year by president, Dave Sher- man: vice-president, Deane Dunlap, secretary, Paula Williams, treasurer, Don Kinnan. Mr. Jones coached his classes of sophomore biology in the delicate art of dissecting bugs, worms. frogs, and other miscellany. With due credit to Mr. Cavins, we emerged from this year as the richest class in the history of the school. Many trees, lamp-posts, and old ladies suHFered from our first at- tempts at driving. One of the most frequent causes for accidents was waving and honking to attract attention as we drove merrily down Arlington Avenue. Our officers were president, Ernie Triffon, 'vice-president, Bill Windersg secretary, Ann Hamilton, treasurer, Dave Sherman. One loss was to powerful Grandview, undefeated in league play. in an exciting contest on the latter's floor. After leading throughout the Hrst half, Arlington linally succumbed to the ultimate league cham- pions. The other loss was suffered at the hands of the Bexley Lions on the Eastsideifs court on a night when the Bears seemed unahle to lind the nets for the necessary points. Although Arlington drew perenially powerful Newark for the initial game ol' the Central Dis- trict Tourney and lost, the Bears ended the season with a line display of haskethall against their mighty opponents. But win or lose, we, the seniors of the 19474 '48 haskethall squad. have been proud to play for Upper Arlington High School, and we shall never forget the great fun along with the hard work that went to make up a Hne and prolitahle season. As soon as the nets were put up on the courts, girls practiced this skillful game to prepare for the tournaments among themselves and with other schools. Golf, a sport in which the girls have participated only a few years at Arlington, has increased in popularity among the girls in grades nine through twelve. Most of the practices were held on the athletic field, but some were able to go to the Ohio State University goll' course for extra practice. Sai? Y- Te en The success of the YfTeen this year has been due to the many varied activities in which the members have participated. At Christmas time, presents and tree decorations were made and presented to a settlement house. Penny Apple Day was held to raise money for world reconstruction relief. At Easter, the girls decorated eggs for the Childrens Home and also held a breakfast, on March 24, for both teachers and students. Among their speakers were an artist, a student from Boys Town, and a policewoman. The new idea of having a joint recognition serv- ice with Grandview was carried out in the form of an impressive service at the Lincoln Road Church. The Y-Teen members were directed in their ac- tivities by their faculty adviser, Miss Wilma Sproull, and by the following officers: Alice Hill, president: Carolyn Longabaugh, vice-president, Cay Thomas, secretary, and Emily Eckclberry, treasurer. The accumulation of the largest treasury yet realized by any preceding Hi-Y group was the outstanding achievement of the Hi-Y this year. Many of these funds were procured by the selling of programs at football games last fall. The sponsoring of a dance in North Hall, together with this sale of programs, was the fundamental means by which this pecuni- ary feat was accomplished. ln addition, the Hi-Y participated in city-wide basketball play. The organization was led this year by Tom But- ler, president, Bob Repine, vice-presidentg Tom Buel, treasurer, and Dick Bernsdorf, secretary. Hi- Y . Pago Um' llumir cal Tlzrcc Page Om' z L, f,,, L D A The L.D.A. Club began a very successful year by winning first prize in the Fourth of july parade for their colorful Hoat. During the rushing season two parties were given-a slumber party and the annual coketail tea. Late in November, at Thanksgiving time, they held the first formal of the year in the Fort Hayes Hotel, with the music of Bruce Winston's orchestra. The club took part in Christmas caroling during the holiday season. May 9 was the date of the tea which the members gave for their mothers. The L.D,A.'s made contribu- tions to various organizations in the course of the year. The officers this year were Jean Griffith, presidentg vice-president, Joann Grifhthg secretary, Nancy U'Grady3 and treasurer, Joyce Olhoett. The seniors of the L.D.A. Club extend best wishes to their club for a wonderful 1948-'49 season. Hundred Four f '3 S.A.f Bushing, dances, spreads, and many other activities have all contributed to the won- derful year the S.A.J.'s have enjoyed together. The annual Christmas Formal was held December 23 at the Seneca Hotel. The an- nual Alumnae Tea was also held during the Christmas season. During the year the S.A.J.'s had several spreads with Grandview and North High sororities. They participated in the Civic Association drive for membership and sponsored a very successful dance in North Hall. The club also contributed money to the American Friends Relief Society. In March, the Bunny Hop, a sport dance, was held with the L.A.L.'s of Grandview. A tea was given for the club mothers in May. To end the year, the underclassmen gave the senior banquet in honor of the graduat- ing club members. The officers this year were Mary Ruth Weigel, president, Beverly Sawyer, vice-presi- dentg Beth Bennett, secretary, Alice Hill, treasurer, and Ann Purpus, historian. It is always with deep regret that the seniors graduate and leave S.A.I. to their suc- cessors, but we will never forget the wonderful experiences we have had with you and we wish you the best of luck in the future. Page One Hundred Five Page One TAC This year the T.A.C.'s have been active in sponsoring activities for both the school and the community. They began the year by replenishing their treasury through a raffle and a rummage sale held in the early fall. After the initiation of the new members in December, a dance was held in their honor at the ROOK house. Following the mid-year rushing and pledging the annual Sweetheart Formal was held February 28 at the University Club. Bart Demings orchestra furnished the music. At a joint meeting with the Phi Gamma Chi's of Bexley, plans were completed for a joint semi-formal dance at Valley Dale on March 25. Throughout the year the T.A.C.'s sponsored dances in North Hall, held bake sales, and had spreads with Grandview and Bexley sororities. The club members also aided in the Civic Association membership drive. The year was brought to a successful close by the senior banquet and the alumnae tea. The T.A.C. seniors leave to the underclassmen the heritage of good times and true friendships that they have enjoyed in their club. Hundred Six DRA C The DRAC club of 1947348 experienced one of its most successful years. This wonderful year was made possible by the initiating of twenty-one new members and by the many activities in which the DRACS participated. To start the season, the DRACS held two rushing parties which were followed by six weeks of pledging and then initiation. A few activities in which the DRACS participated were the dances they held after football and basketball games and the Monday morning chapel service which they conducted. At Christmas time the DRACS sponsored their annual holiday formal at Valley Dale in conjunction with the Phi Alpha Chi,s of Bexley. This dance has become one of the most looked forward-to social events of the Yuletide season. The last event on the DRAC calendar for this year was the rousing brawl given an- nually in honor of the senior members. The club was conducted this year under the capable leadership of lim Roberts, presi- dentg Dave Sherman, vice-presidentg VV. Byron Ireland, secretaryg and Donald Kinnan, treasurer. We, the graduating members of the DR AC club, have experienced many good times and much good eomradeship in our four years of membership. To the future DRACS we wish the best of luck! Page One Iliimlred Seven SIGMA RH O This year has been an interesting and profitable one for the Sigma Rhois. The club's activities were led by Ernie Trilfon, presidentg Bill Cotner, vice-presidentg Dick Tice, sec- retaryg Bob MacEwan, treasurerg and Jack Collins, sergeant-at-arms. Among the many activities of the Sigma Rho's this year were round tables with the S.A.j.'s and the T.A.C.'s. At Thanksgiving the club contributed part ol its treasury for a basket of food which was given to a needy family. The annual Sigma Rho spring formal was, as always, a grand event on the social cal- endar of all Arlington students. To end the year, the annual father-son picnic was held along the Scioto River, and the new officers were announced. The senior members of Sigma Rho wish to all the other members much luck and hap- piness for them and the club in the years to come.
