M. u. , mam; iw j i ? . Socrates once said, The 'unexamined life is not worth living. Following Socrates' advice, we should look for all the meaning we can find in life. ' High school is one of the early places where a student can begin ex amining the meaning of his life. Our. school gives us the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, both intellectual and social. There are clubs, after-schoOl activities, sports, spirit groups, and student government. In our high school years, we experience many emotions, as we strive to be number one, feel the panic of final exams, know the joy in victory, learn the painful lesson of tolerance in defeat. Through these ex- periences we can learn many important things and gain helpful insights into our lives. , 3 if. X; x wmtx xxwwwx n-n-uuu... . . mm..- x1 1! , :1 J A M kw r. Homecoming actlvities started with a rally sponsored by Student Council, consisting of a pie-eating contest, three-legged race, peanut-roll, spirit compe- tition and a diapering and bottle drinking contest. The homecoming game itself was the high point of the weekend. The spirit of the student body was tremendous as they cheered our team on to a 28-19 victory over Pomona, in a sensational comeback at half-time. A fantastic half- time show by our drill team and band was highlighted by the crowning of Nancy Martini as queen. The first off-campus homecoming dinner-dance was held at the Ontario Motor Speedway Victory Circle Restaurant. It was the most memorable week of the 1970-1971 year. .1 uwt app-.. .a...w-xr:, Cw Christmas Formal Another first for Upland High School was the first off-campus Christmas Formal. ' Seniors come and go and very few leave anything other than the traditional class gift to be remembered. The Class of '71 showed leadership in creating a memorable year of spirit and pride. '71 was a year of originality and involvement, marked by such exciting moments as Homecoming night, when the entire student body flooded onto the football field and Upland arose from a prolonged sleep and became united. This one instance proved to be the initiation of what can be truly called an outstanding year. The class of '71, realizing that this would be their final exit, began the year with overwhelming spirit, it spread, and together four classes became one and we had finally arrived. The Class of '71 not only gave Upland High a gift, they gave the perfect year . Seniors revealed the importance of pride in their school and Upland repaid them with many fond memories. Seniors will go their various ways, but long after graduation and sad farewells, we will al- ways remain Upland and proud and people will look back and say, '71. . . it was a very good year! . . .LaVar The Seniors won Homecoming Float Competition with Upland Poursition Ltd. It was here that Upland learned that even the best may lose. But, even though we lost this one game, we the stu- dents of Upland High were brought together in a unity never felt so intensely by our school. With one game left to play, the excitement wasn't over. As we all gathered a- round in the victory of our last game, we wondered if we would make it to the CIF finals. When the word came that we would play W. Covina, it was like a dream come true. Even when that dream was shattered by a loss of 27-20, we were thankful we had been able to witness one of the finest and most spectacular teams Upland has known. yyMI-w u , , - 1 4 W2 g , , , , , , , , , x , ' InCEMEdrano L Q U , , , , , ' , CasslemanWJU , , , ,- , 4 ,. Sweeping through the non-league games with nine wins and only three losses, our team achieved things never accomplished by any previous Upland Varsity Basketball team. They recaptured the Upland-Mont- Clair Tournament championship by defeating Ontario in overtime. As a result of that game, the team received the award for the best defense. Three players, Louie Engle, Leonard Mc- Donald, and Frank Harris made the alI-tourney team. In the most spectacular game of the season, our team succeeded in bring- ing about the triumph of scoring exactly 100 points against Alta Lo- ma's 46 and breaking the old school record of 86. In the Chino Tournament, Upland went to the finals to face Ontario. On the way to the finals they had some great wins, including a 105 victory over Duarte for a tournament high team score. Louie Engle had a tournament high individual score of 32 against Chula Vista. Even though the Highlanders did not win this tournament, they sent two play- ers, Louie Engle and Frank Harris to the all-tourney team. Basketball-124 With the arrival of league games, Upland's amazing team set a new school record by being the first Up- land team to capture the SAL League title and remain undefeated through- out league play. In addition they scored the most consecutive league wins: three from last year and four- teen from this year, surpassing the old record of 16. When league play was over, the Up- land Varsity Basketball team went on to CIF play-offs. It was the sec- ond Upland team to do so. Thrilled by the excitement of CIF, the spec- tators packed the gyms in the first two games. We opposed Tustin in our own gym, and won with a 74-63 victory. The second game was played in the Edison High gym against Fountain Valley and was the most emotional game of the season. We won with a 56-55 edge. Around 200 students traveled 200 miles in buses to watch our third CIF game. Even though the game resulted in an un- fortunate upset, the season was an extremely exciting one and Upland showed that it's team was one of the best FIRST ROW: tl-ri B.Fenton, M.Castillero, L.Lodolo, L.Hampton, M.Scharbrough, J.Goodban. In October the members started working in the Home of Angels, a hospital in Ontario for men- tally retarded children. Each member of the club has a little sister from Los Olivos, a small Community in Upland. Each member individually spends time with a little girl, often bringing home the child for a cooking lesson. For Christ- mas the club took the little sisters to the Montclair Plaza to visit Santa Claus. Every spring 5 Club attends a conference which is represented by all 5 Clubs in the Pacific Region.
