SMITH Superintendent Esato of rustees' The greatness of Upland High School is in the making, it will be determined by effective service which you as a graduate give to the state, the nation, and the world. During your years at Upland High School there have been instilled in you the basic habits of thought and action which will enable you to work your problems through to their logical conclusions. Since the one road to world peace and democratic living is through better education, l'm sure that you, as a Highlander, will do all in your power to provide equal or better opportunities for succeeding generations lt is my hope that not only have your teachers and many friends with whom you have associated here provided you with happy recollections, but also that they have fired you with zeal and deter- mination to make a Highlander count in the march of civilization. Allan G. Smith MR. CHARLES SMITH Trustee QM' eff MR. ALEXANDER McLElSH - i J the Class of 1959: This year marks the final chapter in the growth and develop- ment of our school. Our buildings are completed, we have the first graduating class to spend four years on this campus and every phase of our school life is matured to the point where we can say with pride that we have arrived. lt has been a refreshing experience this year for the first time to know that we have alumni in the community or in college, and the contribution of our school to society in general will increase with the passing years. The Class of 1959 is about to join the ranks of those who spent happy years as Highlanders before stepping out to assume the responsibilities of adult lite. May their lives be rich and productive. A. At home, she goes to a private girl's school where classes are held 6 days a week, but there is no homework over Sunday. She is very impressed with our school buildings and says that in Sweden they are not so modern. Marie also be- longs to two clubs in Sweden, one is a political club and the other is a gym club. As for boys, Marie feels that American boys are a lot like Swedish boys, but are more polite. She says that teenagers in Sweden can do as they please about many things. When asked, Marie replied that the thing she likes best about our country is The hot weather. She also said that she would always remember the freeways and her first football game. Sebastian Lange, our other foreign exchange student, was born in Prague, Czechoslavakia, August 26, 1941. In 1950, he moved to East Germany and at the age of ten his family moved again-this time to Bonn in West Germany. His father is an architect for the government, whose headquarters are in Bonn. 0n the boat coming over to America Sebastian had ample opportunity to meet American teenagers. There were 1,000 of them along with 200 European students. After he reached i . New York, he then flew to Los Angeles and came to Upland to live with the Wolfe family. Although Sebastian speaks English very fluently, the lan- guage barrier does make studies somewhat more difficult. Regardless of this, Sebastian maintains a good scholastic Qlmerican Jfielh Sacrifice record. ACTIVITIES: Sold game tags . . . Car wash ...Food sales... Showed game hunt pictures . . . I Practice? This year the Upland High School orchestra has been changed to a string orchestra. This has greatly improved their quality. Our orchestra went to Redlands University where they were given a third rating which is considered good. They also participated in the Christmas assembly and played for the P.T.ll. and the Upland Women's Club. In the eyes of the students and the faculty, the orchestra has shown promise of being a top-notch group in the coming years. As the football season ended at Upland High School, it culminated the finest record ever recorded by an Upland Football Team. Head Coach Lovitt, End Coach Rischer, and Line Coach Bandy were depressed with preseason practice. But Upland's surprising team scored the only touchdown in a 7-0 win over Glendora, which was to be the first of four consecutive wins. These wins were over San Gabriel, 33-19, Azusa, jx? ,MM . 7-6, and Victor Valley, 20-6, before falling to Pomona in their first ,M f , league outing, 6-0. From here on, until the eighth game of the season, , ,fw- it looked as though the Highlanders were going to be the celler dweller ,gf ,C V H . 1. .. of the Tri-County League. By losing to Claremont 7-0, and Chino 13-0, gre - it seemed like Upland was destined to be shut out the rest of the . ., ,U season. But in the game with Bonita, Upland became the Upland of . . -Ti' -- . W old, beating the Bearcats 14-6. This paved the way for an eventful first 1 ' Homecoming, a 26-6 victory over Corona, thus ending the season with f'-. 4- a a 6-3 record. Carlyle Lyneis was our only selection named to the All-Tri-County .X , League first team and became the first athlete in Upland High's short 4,3 F - 5 history to be awarded a position on a CIF team, this being at the left N: tackle spot on the third string. OOPS! l .4,--1--- f Don't hurt the poor child. Martinez pins another. wrestling Wrestling has become one oi the more popular sports in its first year at Upland High. The team had a record of 10 wins and 1 loss, which is terrific for a first year team. These victories also included the mythical league championship by defeating the only other wrestling team in our league, Chino. Upland's only loss was to Banning, but this was later avenged by a resounding vic- tory. Coach Bandy had charge of the grapplers, and Carlyle Lyneis captained the team. Charlie Martinez, Dave Wadleigh, Dick Caldera, and Carlyle Lyneis all qualified for the C.l.F. semi- finals, with Martinez and Caldera going to the finals. Although Caldera failed to place and Martinez placed fourth, both will be back next year along with everyone except Lyneis and Jones who are the only two seniors on the squad. All that can be said about our wrestling team is: Beware all teams that are on the wrestling schedule for next year. 724 ROW ONE: Lyle Miller Cmgrj, Ken Storms, Jon Boswell, John Grace, Schmutz, Paul Edwards, Jack Cyphers, John McClure, Jim Davis Richard Jerry Thompson, Lino Robledo, John Echelmeyer, Jim Cyphers fmgr.J. Under the guidance of Coach Jerry Kehr, the team finished the season with a 11-10, won-lost record. Hustle, desire, and spirit, despite lack of size, proved the downfall of many larger teams. During Christmas vacation, Upland won a tournament game for the first time in our short history, this win came over Mar Vista, 63-42. In Tri-County League play, Upland had a 7-3 record which is the best yet for a varsity basketball team on this campus. The losses were sustained twice at the hands of Pomona, and once against Bonita in overtime. Claremont and Corona proved easy marks for the Highlanders. Both of our games with Chino were marked with near violence but both times Upland was victorious, the latter win being in overtime on the night of our Basketball Homecoming. John Grace was the bright spot on this year's team, tying Pat Hooven for the scoring championship of the Tri-County League. Both Grace and Lou Black, a junior, were named to the All Tri-County League first team. Captain John McClure and Lino Robledo received Honorable Mention for All Tri-County League. George Jack Cyphers, John McClure Carlyle Lyners Lou Schmutz Alvin H es Davis, Tom Solters, Steve Morrison, John Echelmeger, Clark Corpe, Allen The Upland Varsity Baseball team has a season record of 4 wins and 7 losses. Most of the games have been close. The team is improving and we look for good team effort in the coming games. Potentially the team could be strong. Leading hitters are Tom Solters, Carlyle Lyneis, .lim Davis, Louie Schmutz, lr. Fuentes and Bill Ryan. Many of the other boys look good and will develop into solid hitters soon. The pitching department could be a strong point as the boys improve with each game. Led by lim Davis, we have George Davis, John McClure, Alvin Hawes and Tom Solters on the staff. The catching is done by three dependable performers, Steve Zavitz, lohn Echelmeyer and Steve Morrison. ln the outfield lr. Fuentes, Ken Storms, Ken More and Jack Cyphers are holding their own. The team has a very fine league schedule awaiting them. Each team in the league is stronger this season and it looks like the teams to beat will be Chino, Pomona and Claremont. The team that works the hardest and plays together with improvement each day will be the team to beat. Don't sell our Upland boys short. They'll be in there to win in league play. .1- ,...f- Lyneis makes last out against La Puente. Sophomore Star Tom so g?'T3f.x.' . 35591555 qwrneimff Sv,-ya i I-' 'QLJ-is 1' 14 .. . Their responsibilities are to take care ol any tasks involved in their particular sport. lls you can see, baseball and hockey have two managers where the other sports have only one. The reasons for this is that in these two sports there is a great deal of equipment ta be handled and there are special playdays connected with t em. This year Upland was the host to all the schools in T.C.L. for a hockey playday in March as well as to various tennis and badminton playdays in the fall.
