The Class of '54 is attempting to en- rich this history through the publication of the first school Annual. We are naming our Annual THE EAGLE in hon- or of our school mascot. In this book we are trying to show in pictures and tell in words, the many deeds and activities that are being carried on at our school. The staff wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the administration, faculty, student body, and all others who have helped to make this edition possible. The Editor ALMA MATER Dear School, we're proud of you indeed Sweet memories we'll retain, For all the long years yet to come These treasures shall remain. Our honor to the blue and gold Which colors will never fade, Our pride for these dear old walls Where training has been made. Chorus: Oh, Upchurch High! Dear Upchurch High! We sing our praises to-thee, Through all these years you've been so dear We pledge our loyalty. You have our kindly wishes As years of future pass, Our faith, our prayers go out to thee As long as life shall last. On through each gleaming test Our hopes are guided by thy light, Still we will remember thee To keep our future bright. I MEMQRIAM DAVID PINKERTON SCURLOCK. During the twelve yearsf1929 -19411 David Pinkerton Scurlock was principal, educational progress was very evi- dent. He gave his services freely and unselfishly for the es- tablishment and development of school buildings. His chief interest was creating an atmosphere for a high school in Hoke County. We are still building upon that foundation that he so courageously laid. He was a stalwart pioneer, a conscientious leader, and a sincere friend of humanity. DEDICATIO MISS ANNA G. SMITH For the inspiration she has given us and to the many graduating classes before us and for the untiring efforts she has so will- ingly displayed in helping us to publish this Annual, the Staff feels very grateful in dedicating the 1954 edition of THE EAGLE to Miss Anna G. Smith. 1 QW QQ X O PRINCIPAL This Annual is a pictorial review of the continuous growth and progress of the Upchurch School. It is a manifestation of the sincere co-operation and fine work of all persons affiliated with our institu- tion. This true spirit of working together which permeates our institu- tion is invaluable to the well-rounded development of each student. The Staff and Faculty Advisors are to be congratulated for the ex- cellent work they have done in putting together this Annual. MCNEILL MCCORMICK ALLMOND Hazelle McLaughlin CLASS HISTORY As we, the Senior Class, look back over our four years in high school, we find many events which will be remembered long after our graduation. We entered as Freshmen in the year of 1950 with one hundred and twenty-six members. Since we had been in this building for our eighth grade year, everything was not quite so new and foreign to us. Our officers in our Hrst year were: President, Charles McKinnong Vice President, Broadway Jackson: Secretary, Ruth McAllister, Treasurer, Betty Sue Malloy. Our homeroom teachers were Miss S. M. Truzerls and Mrs. C. W. Johnson. As freshmen, we became active high school students. Many of us joined the basketball team, the Choral Club, the Library Club and the Band. During this year we gave to the school a pair of Deluxe School Scales. By the end of our freshman year we really had the high school spirit. In our Sophomore year there were ninty-three of us. Our officers were: President, Ben Alstong Vice President, Dorothy Morriseyg Secretary, Betty Sue Malloy. Our home- room teacher was Miss S. C. Reddick. During our sophomore year Hazelle McLaughlin won the title Miss Upchurch and was also crowned May Queen. We gave to the school a set of Reference Books. ln the Fall of 1952, our Junior Class was a happy group of seventy-four. Our officers were: President, Leroy Horsleyg Vice President, Theodore Hollingsworth, Secretary, Ruth McAllister, Treasurer, Betty Sue Malloy. Our homeroom teachers were Miss S, M, Truzerls and Mrs. R. H, Hinton. The highlights of this year were the Junior-Senior Prom the winning of the title Miss Upchurch by Iessie Bell Daniels and the winning of May Queen by Ruth McAllister. Ruth was also awarded first prize in the local Annual World Peace Speaking Contest and third prize in the Regional Contest held in Charlotte, N.C. During this year we gave to the school an outdoor American flag. Our final year began in September, 1953 with sixty-five members. The officers were: President, Leroy Horsleyg Vice President, Theodore Hollingsworth, Secretary, Betty Malloy: and Treasurer, Ruth McAllister. Our homeroom teachers were Miss A. G. Smith and Mrs. C. W, Johnson. As seniors we had many responsibilities before us and we worked hard to accomplish the projects undertaken. The outstanding events of our senior year were setting up Senior Standards, preparing for graduation and publish- ing the Annual. We leave our school with deep regret, but hope that others who may follow us will carry our school banner to success. We will always be grateful for the experiences we have had here. We hope to show our gratitude by becoming good citizens. Betty Sue Malloy, Historian CLASS WILL We, the graduating class of 1954, do hereby make our will: To our Principal, we leave our gratitude for his help and his understanding of our many problems. To our teachers who have been our friends and loyal counselors, we leave our accom- plishments as Seniors. From you our accomplishments came and to you they should be returned. To the Juniors, we bequeath our good luck and well-known nerve which they will need next year. We also leave our honored place as Seniors. May you build a bigger and better school community. To the Sophomores, we leave our long suffering and unquestionable patience. To the Freshmen, we leave our school. You will be here a long time. May you improve all the departments. Mamie Lee Smith PROPH ECY Twenty years have passed since I was a senior at Upchurch. Since that time I have traveled extensively. Some of my trips brought me in contact with many classmates, and I have gained much knowledge about them. Leroy Horsley has established a business school where many boys and girls are taking Typing, Shorthand, and Bookkeeping. Christopher Evans, Benjamin Alston, and Ernest McLaughlin are members of the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Team. James Ray and James McRae are owners of the Ray--McRae Restaurants in Raeford, Aberdeen, and Southem Pines. Victoria McPhatter operates an art studio. Many of her paintings are in the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. John Thomas and Lewis Melvin are successful farmers. They own large plantations where all modern equipment is at work. Ophelia Alford, Charlee McDonald, Nellie Melvin, and Catherine McMillan are leading educators in various places of their native state. Willie McNeill is now training voices in his famous studio. Gladys McPhatter, now married, operates a group of Beauty Salons. Hair styling is her specialty. Working with her are Evelyn Monroe, 'Eloise Morrison, and Ollie Kearns. Bertha McRae and George Morrison are famous dancers. They have made many appearances in Europe and South America. Ruth McAllister is now an outstanding concert singer. She was recently accepted as a member of a New York opera. Donella Quick is also a singing star on Broadway. Many outstanding housewives and civic leaders are in Raeford. Among them are Sallie McNeill and Strata Covington. At last Raeford has a School of Embalming. The operators are Samuel McRae - manager, his wife, Channie Smith is secretary. Other members of the staff are Sylvester Covington, William and James Pope, Lawrence Murchison and Smith Allmond. Melvin McLean operates a fleet of taxis in Red Springs. With him are Theodore Hollingsworth - Co-Owner, Wilbert Harris - business manager, and J. W. Harris. The charming office girl is the former Gladys Morrison. Farm Demonstrator Richard McLaughlin has a lovely home and family on his prosperous farm near Bowmore. The Daniels and Carpenter Dress Shop is a new addition to the business section on U street in Washington, D.C. PROPHECY Qcontinuedj McCormick Allmond is art instructor at Howard University. Many of his students have won recognition for painting and sculpturing. Hazel Finkley, Alberta McNeill, Georgia Treadwell are now seasoned teachers of English at North Carolina College, Durham, N.C. Caleb David and James McNeill are co-owners of a big service station. Oh yes! Paul Green and Robert Henderson are helpers in this spacious building. Johnnie McLaughlin, James Graham, and Eugene Edens are operating a large Grocery Store in the newly organized town of Bowmore. They have decided to remain at home in order to build big business corporations. Vera Lloyd and Annie Allen are-outstanding nurses at St. Agnes Hospital in Raleigh. Neal Bratcher and Archie Smith are now operating a Shoe Shop. They are trying to save all soles. Betty Malloy, I-lazelle McLaughlin, and Helen McNair have positions at various colleges. Of course, they are associated with the band since their chief interest is in training majorettes to become high steppers. Mamie Smith and Maggie Mcliachin are famous psychiauists. They are affiliated with the public school system in New York. Gladys Moultrie is very satisfied as a missionary in the foreign field. Her gospel songs are winning many converts. Sallie C. McNeill Class Prophetess CLASS POEM HONOR All honor to our worthy school We strive to prove with every rule All honor to marks that we Have handed to prosperity. In history never will there arrive Our like again, we dare surmise First in word! First in play! What higher praises could one say? A special talent marks each one His shoulders thus to lean upon Mantles of achievements gay. That helped us reach Commencement Day. Submitted by Leroy Horsley CLASS SONG QTuneg Now is the Hourj Now is the time, when we must say goodbye, Soon we'1l be leaving Dear Ole Upchurch High. While we're away, we'1l strive to reach our goal, And leaving your banner high, we'11 say goodbye. We stand within, the goal of all our dreams, Our hearts are rippling, like the million streams. Streams filled with love, with joy, with work and cheer All that we know comes through the years. Dear School we know that you'll carry on Helping and guiding those who would be strong. Making each day. each year a stepping stone, Guiding our feet along the path unknown.
