THE GOWN Once worn by all students, it is now restricted to the Order of Gownsmen as a symbol of aca- demic excellence, leadership, and character. It is probably the most desired object on the Moun- tain. Most hope to have earned it before they take their comprehensives. Many dread Opening Convocation because they have yet to receive it. This tradition of the academic gown is now limited almost exclusively to the ivory towers of the University of the South. Here the gown has been worn for 115 years.
