Our Tennessee haven contradicts George Orwell ' s world system in support of the Utopi- an antithesis of his world; an older order, perhaps one experienced and envisioned by Andrew Lytle and his fellow fugitives. Our mountain Utopia is an educa- tional institution that cultivates academic excellence. But our world provides more than intellectual growth. The environment at Sewanee encourages trust in fellow human beings, stimulates the chal- lenge of ideas through its liberal arts tradition, and highlights ideas which merit personal value. Further- more, Sewanee allows for spiritual exploration and growth. These benefits are the short and long term results of an investment. You, being a wise consumer, are investing four years of your life in a private institu- tion, revered by many. For a hefty sum of money, you will have received in exchange, a proper education — culture included — and a piece of lambskin to attest to it. ■■■K ... . ' ■SB , ■' ■' ■■■' .■■■- i - - ■-- ' - ' -■As a Student of the University of the South, you will obtain a liberal arts edu- cation in the hope of bettering yourself and the society in which you will live. Not only are you making an investment in Sewanee but the University is invest- ing in you. Through you and other alum- ni, Sewanee is making an investment in itself and the future. Who else will the University turn to for support? It will seek your advice and guidance, as alumni, through the Alumni Association and the Board of Trustees. The domain continues to require more funds to increase its educational capa- bilities and expand its facilities. Most im- portantly, in the current, national colle- giate environment of declining enroll- ment and increasing costs, you will be Sewanee ' s ambassadors helping to re- cruit new students and sharing the Sewanee experience with others. So as 1 984 passes, put your money into something that ' s worth it Sewanee, the great investment. w%2Bm fcS© 3S ,T ™ I 1984 Cap Gown DEDICATION The 1983-84 Cap Gown staff proudly dedi- cates this yearbook to the many Sewanee alumni who have made the University of the South what it is today. For the older and younger alumni alike, without their gracious funding, our budget would sag; without their moral support, our col- lege would lack motivation; without their expe- rience, our school would lack guidance and im- provement; and without their presence, our do- main would lack color. It is they that have given Sewanee its impeccable and evergrowing repu- tation, and it is to them we tip our hats . . . thanks. . . . SEWANEE ALUMNI 17 . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIG CORRINE BURG 18 Crisp, clean, and always pleasant, Corrine Burg greets you, asking if she can help you. You are in the library by the way, the Special Collections room. She glides effortlessly through her several stacks of books, yanks down your object of interest, and cheerfully points out a table for your use . . . Take your time, she says. With your dusty trea- sure in hand, you think, Gosh, she really knows her stuff. Well no wonder. This patroness of literature is marking her 40th year of service to Sewanee and its library. Starting out in Convocation Hall, the original library, Ms. Burg has seen DuPont rise and has been instru- mental in its development. From our staff, the students, and your loving library colleagues, congratulations and thank you for your time, help, and undivided devotion. ER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . . HIGHLIGHTER . . RUTH GREEN You get along with her or you don ' t get along with her. But by God, you respect her. Yes, this is our mother away from home, Ruth Green. And unbeknown to many, Ruth is marking her 20th year of grooming and disciplining young Sewanee hellions — which she does for free. She actually makes her living checking your I.D. ' s at Gailor and managing the B.C. part time. And alas, for those who have learned, Ruth is the person whose bread you strive to butter. But from those who have Ruth ' s respect, and from the others who want it, congratulations and thanks. This is to you, Mom! 19 Anthropology. . . Asian Studies . . . Biology. . . Chemistry. . . The surface met them, jagged edged, green and slick, but hard as brick on the knee. Bubbles slowly rose, settled among the rotten reed roots under the ice roof. Daddy ' s work glove reached, huge and warm, and I rose up gliding, rumbling on boot-numb bumps. The wind boned bare the nose and slapped the cheek ' s fat as we scratched and slid our clumsy blades. Passing by the reeds again, his hand gripped, wobble-weighted — we see-sawed, tottering, up and back in crazy turns, floundering — but wound down to careful balance, freezing wooden on the ice lest the sliding slip again. Tombo came at us, gaining speed from across the pond — our skates began to scramble, tck, tock, and scritch, frenzied — sped at us and scooped a stop. Legs slight-folded, popped a cold wind, skidding ice glits. Daddy ' s eyes lit, wonder struck at Tombo ' s wind. Neat, he said, and Tombo ' s cheeks twitched, trying not to smile, turned and skated, a breeze, out of the reeds again. Within the conference ' s theme framework, Into the Future: 1984, coordinators boasted such events as those high- lighted below: Gail G. Thomas, psychotherapist and co- founder of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, served as keynote speaker for the conference with her lecture, Coping With the Pandora Complex. The Student-Faculty Dialogue worked with the conference to set up a panel which examined what is male and female. Also included was a panel of four couples speaking on dual-career relationships. Author and researcher, Dr. Marlene Boskin- White, spoke on Women, Emotions, and Food. Lois Ibsen al Faruqi, artist and Islamic scholar, lectured on Feminism and the Survival of the Islamic Tradition. Sewanee seminarian, Carmen Guerrero, spoke on The Book of Ruth as a Model for Liberation. Nurse and administrator, Pauline J. Clark, and the Reverend Robert Ross, priest and hos- pice founder in Alabama, spoke on Hospice: A Feminine Perspective on Health Care. Ruth Campbell, executive producer for pub- lic affairs for the Mississippi Educational Televi- sion, spoke on women in the media. Beverly Earle, attorney and affirmative ac- tion officer for Bently College, spoke on Sexual Harrassment in the Workplace and Academe. Crow Johnson, singer, songwriter, and in- strumentalist, gave a concert and a workshop in songwriting. ♦Films, Killing Us Softly and Rosie the Riveter, were shown, depicting women as ad- vertising objects and women ' s roles during and after World War II, respectively. 118 NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN We, men and women who hereby constitute ourselves as the National Organization for Women, believe that the time has come for a new movement toward true equality for all women in America . . . The purpose of NOW is to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men. NOW Statement of Purpose, October 1966 Sharon Brockett, President Juliana Evans, V-President Kathryn Rappolt, Secretary Ann Oliver, Treasurer Carrie Ashton Scott Bates Lynne Bonds Sara Todd Boswell David Camp Sewanee ' s NOW chapter, still in its fledgling stage, was founded three years ago. Emerging as a more active organization this year, NOW sponsored Beverly Earle, attorney and affirmative action offi- cial at Bentley College, as a part of the Sewanee Women ' s Conference. This began Sewanee ' s first and ongoing Conscious-raising group using NOW guidelines. Another new institution was the printing of the Hear NOW, an underground newsletter of sorts used to reach out to Sewanee ' s campus and communi- ty. The chapter also sent four delegates to the NOW National Convention in Washington, D.C. and two delegates to the state convention. ADTs have devoted this year to working toward community service and creating a bond of friendship and sisterhood within our sorority. In the fall, we cranked up for our Progressive Drinking Party. In October, we gave a Halloween Party for the Big Sis- ter Big Brother community program. Selling pump- kins was just as fun, but the most was the Kegs for Legs Contest ! Our Christmas formal with the PKE ' s was the topping on a wonderful semester. In the spring, we started up with a great rush; picking up a fantastic pledge class. An extremely small membership started us out slowly, but the pledge class added much life, energy, and vitality. In spite of our size, we managed to participate in the SPS Halloween Carnival and have donut sales. We also co- sponsored a St. Patrick ' s Day Party with Cannon Dorm and Sewanee off Broadway. None of what we did would have been possible without our wonderful seniors. We ' ll miss you Alice, Dot, Sue, Laura, and Ginny! Oh my God, how did you get it so green?? . . . Looking into those past years, the Iota-Nu chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha has much to be proud of; at the same time, looking to- ward the future, it has a great deal to build toward. Continuing in the Lambda Chi tradi- tion, the Chops had their yearly pig roast, Parent-Faculty Cocktail Party, and strongly supported the annual com- munity blood drive. The year was round- ed out by an excellent associate class. The inspirational retreat coupled with continuing efforts in rush will serve to strengthen the open spirit and closeness of the bond between the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha. Mixed drinks . . . Hugh Caldwell, philosophy professor, led the original ski team before it became dormant. The present team was revived four years ago by Caroline Hopper. Each year more experienced racers return, and the pros- pects for the 1985 season are excellent. The U.S. Ski Team is a member of the Southern Collegiate Racing Association. Students participate in Slalom and Giant Slalom, skiing man-made snow at Beech Mountain in North Carolina and Ober-Gatlin- burg in Tennessee. Races are held the first four weeks of the Easter semester at Ober-Gatlinburg on Thurs- days and Beech Mountain on Fridays. The team for each race is composed of those students who attend the open meeting held the day before departure. The five person A team and the three person B team for both men and women are chosen by the coach, based on available knowledge of skills. To date, every person able to attend has participated in at least one race. This year ' s team was led by Bobby Persons, presi- dent. Other returning racers were Camille McWhirter, vice-president, Matt Engleby, treasurer, Bertha Booker, Trey Greer, Morgan Bomar, Jack Ni- chols, and other racers, all of whom did well. Melissa Bulkley placed fourth in the individual Slalom, the best single finish ever for Sewanee. ■ JN ♦ . DRAMATIC ARTS For those whose interests run to the dramatic, the Fine Arts Department provides ample opportunity for students to perform and direct a variety of theat- rical productions. In addition to several major pro- ductions a year, there are many smaller student di- rected shows presented at the Outside Inn. The offer- ings of the 1983-84 season were varied and ranged from the serious to the lighthearted. For the lover of serious drama, the play Terra Nova by Ted Talley, telling the story of the race to the South Pole between the British and the Norweigians, presented an even- ing of provocation and enjoyment. On the lighter side, several musically oriented productions were staged including the musical Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris and the musical review performed at the Tiger Bay Pub. In addition to student organized productions there are many other opportunities for Sewanee students to take advantage of the various forms of performing arts. One such avenue is through the Performing Arts Series, an organization that seeks to bring talents of world renown to the Mountain. The series brings to Sewanee a vari- ety of performers throughout the year and all concerts are free to University students. In the recent past, performers have ranged from gui- tarist Christopher Parkening to the classical sounds of the Beaux Arts Trio. The Series is not limited to the realm of the instrument. It has brought the sounds of the New Swingle Singers, a jazz ensemble, and has presented Shake- speare ' s The Comedy of Errors performed by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. While Sewanee may seem isolated at first glance, further investigation proves that this is not the case. On the Mountain, the opportunities for a variety of cultural events abound. MOUNTAIN TALES 217 - Wednesday, November 2 — 8 P.M. Guerrv Auditorium Wed., Jan. 25 8 PM G u err Lucktenberg Duo 218 . . . SEWANEE ' S OWN PERFORMERS . . . 219 . .. SLEEPING Although life on the Mountain is somewhat separated from the rest of the world we are, nonetheless, gov- erned by the same 24 hours as the rest of the world. We face the same de- lemma as all college students; how to budget our time so that we can get everything done and still have time to study. Sleep is of major importance to most students — the average require- ment ranging from eight to ten hours, depending on the activities of the pre- vious day. It is of some importance to note that the individual who is able to function on less than two hours sleep in a 24 hour period does exist. The sea- soned veteran has mastered the art of catching forty winks in any situation and can be observed in a number of locations: the library reading room, in the sun (a popular choice for girls), and, on rare occasions, in his or her own bed. 220 . . . PLAYING . . . There are those who place other activities ahead of sleep on the priorities list. A popular option and out- let for tension is through participation in sports. For the competitor, a fierce rivalry exists between the various fraternities and their members can be found on any given afternoon engaged in one sport or an- other, from football to basketball. For most however, the thrill of victory is not the motive. They are concerned primarily with the enjoy- ment and release that come from a good workout. In that case there are a variety of options from hiking and canoeing to a good game of hackysack in front of the library. However the problem remains, having exercised the body and the spirit, do we still have time for the mind? 221 AND ... FINALLY... 222 ...WE STUDY... In spite of all the complaining and procrastinating when the time finally arrives when we can stall no long- er most of us will apply ourselves to the task at hand and get down to serious studying. Before we are able to study we must go through registration. Registration is always frustrating and it seems that professors take great delight in telling us that classes are full or aren ' t being offered. We often assume that their primary goal is to destroy every schedule we have labouriously drawn 3ut and to insure that we have eight o ' clocks five days a veek. The whole process does seem to get e asier as we go along, or maybe we just become immune to the process, and by the time we pre-register for classes in :he fall things go quite smoothly. Once everybody has found at least four classes to ake they seem to establish a routine of studying and preparing for their class meetings. There seem to be two listinct types of students: those who faithfully keep up md those who procrastinate only to panic at the last minute. Study locations are as varied as study habits. Some choose an assigned carrel in the library while others opt for their dorm rooms or the outdoors. What- ever the locale the result is the same. Those who are dedicated to the principles of order are always prepared and usually start to study at least two weeks before any test. Incidentally, these people are never fatigued and would never entertain the idea of pulling an all nighter. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those who insist on waiting until after dinner the night before something is due to even come up with a topic. They remain in Night Study until the morning when they crawl to class to turn in their paper or test. Regardless of the method of study, we get our assign- ments finished and seem to strive for excellence in our work. It is the desire of most to attain academic excel- lence and to join the ranks of black robed students who inhabit the domain. 223 STUDYING ..THE REST OF THE TIME... In between studying, playing, and just getting on with the business of life Sewanee students manage to accomplish an astonishing number of things. The remaining pages are filled with shots of us doing the things we like to do best. They form a picture of lifestyles that are highly indi- vidual and yet, they all come together to create an espirit de corps that is uniquely Sewanee and sets us apart from life off the Mountain. 225 226 227  - a. Because of the location on the Cumberland Plateau, the University is in a unique position to offer a variety of outdoor sports. To meet the needs of a number of stu- dents, the Outing Club was formed to assist in the planning and implementation of outdoor activities. The Club has grown and water type sports are just one of the many activities that the group engages in. Through the Outing Club, students can learn caving, repelling, and a variety of other woodland survival techniques. Because of the composition of the Club and the philosophy of the director, Carrie Ashton-Winslow, the group is flexible enough to accommodate the desire of any student. A recent example was the formation of a bicycle group that culminated the year with a bicycle trip from Sewanee to Charleston, South Carolina. The Sewanee Ski Team also functions through the Outing Club and participates in several races during the year. 236 237 HOMECOMING 238 239 || K .- ' - ' ? r W-..- -.-.-.•-,:ivv. -«t-i. ■.■--- i f ! • i k 240 241 GRADUATION David Eric Brumgard, Valedictorian Carlotta Arlene Cooper, Salutatorian 1984 242 5 HrSb URHL fl T ■.9 ' J Va id %ri£jP 3W| A 4 ■Wk 1 (By 3 r l :.. That feel- ing, often felt on Christmas morning when all the packages have been opened and all the special foods have been eaten, is how we feel now that the 1983-84 edition of the Cap Gown has gone to press. Production of this book required long hours of effort. Late night sessions spent finalizing sections before their deadlines were com- mon. The more work we did, the more there seemed to be done, and things are just now beginning to come to a close. However, the long hours and headaches did not seem as tortuous when we consider the benefits derived from the many new experiences, new friends, and new challenges. Many individuals have contributed to this annual. We want to thank all those who have given their time, suggestions, and labor. We would especially like to extend our appreciation to: Mr. Frank Myers, the Delmar representative, for his helping hand, ideas, words of advice, and his undying patience concerning the notorious deadlines; Mr. Mitch Carter and the Moore ' s Studio for consenting to take the class pictures, when no one else would, at short notice and at no charge; the businesses which supported the Cap Gown by purchasing advertisements; to Bea Covington for her effort be- yond the call of duty; and a special thank you to Lynn Hutchinson, for without whom there would be almost no pictures to look at. The Cap Gown staff has endeavored to make this yearbook reminiscent of the various events and ideas of the year. We hope you feel we were successful in our goal. In parting, we wish the best of luck to the editor and staff of the 1984-1985 Cap Gown — more power to you. W r A £ - ' u L j - U
