There ' s . u.W. stout Every student at this university has been taunted at one point or another by their hometown friends because they ' took the easy way out. They have also heard the one that goes ' when in doubt, go to Stout. Well, one must realize that these quips and comments come from people who don ' t attend this university, and therefore don ' t realize what a great place this is. They may have never even seen the campus, yet they feel that they can pass judgement on us, the students of Stout. We know that this is an excellent university and that we are getting quality educa- tions here. We know that we have facilities that provide hands on ex- perience necessary to function in to- days world. We know we have some of the best food in the U.W. system. We know our student center offers everything we need to fill our free- time; clothes us, and keeps us from going hungry. We know that our ath- letes are some of the best in the area and our athletic teams are vertually unstopable. We are absolutely sure that we wouldn ' t want to attend any other university, and we are certain that we made the right choice. So don ' t listen to those who question Stout ' s virtues and please ignore those who made fun of your choice to attend this university, for when it gets right down to it, the bottom line is: THERE ' S MO DOUBTI

Dedication Dedication This book is dedicated to Chancellor Charles Sorensen. We see in him the spirit and enthusiasm that is the key to a successful future. When he was inaugurated on May 6, he said that his inauguration ■ ... is really the celebration of the University of Wis- consin, Stout, not the celebration of a single person. It is the time when we, as a university community, should reflect on who we are, on our path to this day, and on our future. This future at Stout includes an ag- gress effort to hire more minority fac- ulty and staff, and to recruit more minority students. It also includes upholding the excellent traditions and honors that Stout holds in itself and around the world. Chancellor Sorensen is committed to ensuring quality education for every Stout stu- dent. Me will not rest on luxeries, however. Chancellor Sorensen be- lieves it is essential for the university to develop new programs that will meet the needs of the changing soci- ety, lie believes that we must take responsiblity for these changes and never waver for our goals as a uni- versity and as an individual. Chan- cellor Sorensen holds many great plans for Stout. Me has the spirit and drive necessay to keep Stout com- petitive with other schools. He repre- sents the pride and honor that stu- dents, faculty and alumni feel when they think of Stout. Tor all these rea- sons we dedicate this book to him. Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen. The Tower Yearbook proudly dedicates Volume LXXX to Canceller Charles W. Sorensen, the backbone of U.W. Stout. Congratulations!

Memorial tA- Center Celebrates! The Student Center celebrated its 30th birthday on October 25th. Al- though it has gone through many changes over the years, including a move, it has always provided the stu- dents up to date information and a place to hang out. The original Union was housed in the Communication Technology building. It housed the Bookstore, the original Fawn, com- plete with lifesize chess pieces, a bowling alley and cafeteria. There was also a ballroom and many small meet- ing rooms. In 1985 the Memorial Stu- dent Center was opened. The Pawn, Bookstore and bowling alley moved over, and the Terrace Cafe was added. Room for pool tables and video games was also added, along with the Great Hall and more meeting rooms. To celebrate the 30 years, the Student Center hosted a bubble launch and a reception complete with cake, clowns, party favors and enter- tainment. The Terrace, Recreation Center, Service Center, Bookstore, and Fawn also offered back to the past specials. The Student Center has been and will continue to be a large part of every student ' s life. This day marked just how important it is.
