Award nomination Gov. of Year The Stout Student Association was nominated for Student Qovernment of the Year by Chancellor Charles Sorenson. The award is presented every year by UW system President Kenneth Shaw, and reflects continuous initiative and paricipation in universi- ty governance. Those nominated are judged on innovative services, signifi- cant contributions to formulating poli- cies relating to student life, academic concerns, and other relevant contribu- tions. The winner rccieves possession of a traveling plaque. Chancellor Sorenson nominated the SSA based on how they have performed during the past year. SSA has also received letters ofsupport from Menomonie ' s Chamber of Com- merce Executive Director Duane Bauer, Mayor Chuck Stokke, Police Chief Dennis Beety, and State Senator Dick Shoemaker. University governments which are moninated are then required to send a letter of support to Shaw, who selects one of the nominations for the award. Stout ' s letter of support was written by Vice President of Academic Affairs Kevin Miller. Some of the high- lights included sponsoring a debate be- tween Wisconsin State Senate candi- dates Berndt and Shoemaker, holding the Housing Fair, seating two reps on the Chancellor ' s Council, and register- ing over a thousand students tovote in nov. elections.
