1986 was a year of great joy and bitter sorrow. All the world wept as the Challenger exploded 73 seconds after take off, killing all seven crew members. Terrorists continued to kill innocent people. Lady Liberty turned 100 years old and the country watched as the New York Mets beat the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series. Nationally, the White House was rocked with scandal as Oliver North ' s secret Iran trading deals were discovered. Nicholas Daniloff, a U.S. journalist in Moscow, was arrested for selling U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union. The Baby M case had everyone questioning the value of surrogate mothers. On the state level, the drinking age was raised to 21, despite much controversy, and Eugene Hasenfus, from Marinette, was arrested for supplying the Contras with weapons. The media has everyone looking for Herb the Burger King nerd and grabbing a Pepsi with Michael. Ousted Philippines President, Ferdinand Marcos was forced to leave his country and Corazon Aquino took his place. The Chernobyl incident also had people asking themselves if nuclear power was worth the risks. AIDS hit home when famed actor. Rock Hudson, died from the tragic disease, and Ryan White finally won his battle and was allowed back in school despite his affliction. Even though the world seemed to be falling apart at the seams, humanitarian causes brought us together. We Are The World raised money for Ethiopia, and Hands Across America was an effort to help the hungry in our own country. The year brought about many changes, some good, some bad, but everyone felt them and was touched somehow.

On September 29, 1987, the Financial Affairs Committee of the Stout Student Association moved to establish a committee to study the feasibility of continuing the publication of the Tower Yearbook. Todd Paavola was chosen to head the study committee to seek out students interested in working on a yearbook study as well as to identify students interested in becoming yearbook staff members. The 1986-87 Tower Yearbook was not yet completed because of a lack of students remaining from the 1986-87 production staff. Survey results indicated a strong interest for a year- book. Brian Euclid was elected as Editor-in-Chief and along with his staff developed a new office space, submitted funding proposals to the Stout Student Association and Stout Foundation, ac- cepted new publication bids and completed the work necessary to finish this, the 1986-87 Tower Yearbook. Our staff is composed primarily of Freshmen who took on the responsibility of completing this book while trying to plan the 1987-88 book. We hope that you judge us not on the quality of this book but on yearbooks to come in the future. Thank You Tower Yearbook Staff
