University Speakers The University Speakers Series Com- mission is composed of University of Wisconsin-Stout students and faculty and also members of the Menomonie Community who are not associated with the University. It is the purpose of the Commission to present a year- long program of speakers on a wide variety of topics, but with an emphasis on current issues and problems facing the American people. The intention of the commission is to promote political and social awareness on the Univer- sity campus and within the surround- ing community. The Speakers Series is made possible with funds provided by the University Student Senate of the Stout Student Association. Vladimir Bukowsky The Human Rights Struggle in the USSR Bom in Russia in 1942. Vladimir Buk- owsky has had a long history of trouble with the Russian authorities. He was expelled from Moscow University for publishing an underground literary jour- nal; arrested and sentenced to prison for possessing a forbidden book; later sent to an insane asylum and finally released in 1965. After several more arrests, and a num- ber of years in various prisons, Bukows- ky was exchanged for imprisoned Chi- lean Communist Party Secretary, Luis Corvalen Lepe. On March 1, 1977, he became the first Soviet dissident to be received by a President of the United States. Hugh Kaufman The Great Toxic Waste Scandal Hugh Kaufman is one of the most controversial figures in the environmen- tal movement today. Director of the Federal Toxic Waste Disposal Program, Kaufman is the main obstacle to the Reagan Administration ' s attempts to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency. Kaufman is credited with uncovering illegal toxic waste dumps at the Love Canal and Valley of the Drums in Toone, Tennessee. 52 Universil) Speakers
