Another Dimension The city of Menomonie is yet another dimension to Stouts ' student ' s educa- tion. All of us come from different backgrounds. For some, Menomonie is a large metropolis, too big and congested, while there are others that think of Menomonie as a speck on the map too small to be called a city. What ever we think, it does have an impact on us. What ' s there to do in Menomonie? a most popular phrase we hear from Stout students. Menomonie ' s rich historic background offers students an array of culture, for example the Mabel Tainter Theater, a refurbished Victo- rian era theater where performances are still being held today. UW-Stout, together with Menomonie, recognizes the rich history with the recently refurbished Ichkleberger Hall, other- wise known as the Louise Smith Tain- ter Home, now housing the Stout Alumni and Foundation office. Menomonie has plenty to offer in the area of recreation as well. In 1985 and 86, students certainly took advantage of Menomonie ' s waterways, Lake Me- nomin and the Red Cedar River. Stu- dents made their tracks down the Red Cedar Trail by foot. Ski and Bicycle, sometimes stopping off in Irvington for some additional encouragement. Others avoided the trail and floated down the river by inner tube or pad- dled a canoe. Students got their use out of Lake Menomin by laying on the beach at Wakanda, and sailing in the summer and ice skating and snowmo- biling in the winter. Last of all, a real added dimension, we can ' t forget Menomonie ' s downtown. We ' ll remember Menomonie ' s down- town in a variety of ways — Long Island Iced Tea night at the Log Jam, a movie at the theater on Broadway, the Qyron at Ted ' s, high school stu- dents congregating outside Lee Drug, Beat the Clock at the Meet Market, the double dip at Jan ' s Ice Cream Parlor, dancing on the bar at the Spot, the late night pizza at Rocky ' s and cheese and crackers at Mel ' s happy hour. So as we look back, we can see that in 1985-86, Menomonie definitely had an impact on all of us, thus adding another dimension. Opening 13

Sense Of Direction Education is the primary reason UW- Stout exists, and 1985-86 offered plenty of it, all of which added to the student ' s sense of direction. We leam as much, if not more, outside of class as we do in. We saw many more directions than in the classroom alone. Stout offered students the chance to expand their horizons out- side the classroom. Many students gained valuable experience as they worked part-time at one of several locations on campus. This also gave students an opportunity to make some extra money and in some cases receive academic credit through inde- pendent studies or field experience. 1985-86 brought cultural opportuni- ties to campus as well, whether it was listening to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra or Flo Kennedy, watching films or going to the Pawn to see a performer. Finally, 1985-86 offered a host of activities for students to participate in. The Recreation Center was always available for a quick game of Centi- pede or a couple frames of bowling. Intermurals, activities like Homecom- ing and Winter Carnival, athletic events, and club programs all added to the students ' sense of direction. 14 Opening
