TOWER 86 University of Wisconsin-Stout 1986 Tower Volume 77 f ■1986 Tower Staflf Editors-in-Chief Maggie Seal Mike Turek Layout Staff Amy Sekas Vicki M eland Maggie Seal Copy Staff Cheryl LaFountain Photography Staff Mike Turek Kathy Hartung Qary Stuewer Renee Celerak Voices Of Imagination 1985 and 1986 offered UW-Stout plen- ty of imagination voiced in many ways. This year created an impression that won ' t be forgotten. Big and comfortable set the trend for fashion. Girls turned to more unisex clothing, adding the feminine touch with an accessory or two. Girls also added to their wardrobes the dreaded stretch pants they hated as children, now calling them stirrups. Guys, be- coming more and more fashion con- scious, took a second look at their wardrobes this year adding a little more variety in their style and adding some accessories to their wardrobe as well. Both sexes sported bold colors and bright prints. It was not surprising to see Benetton, Forenza, Coca-cola, or Genera in big bold letters across the front or back of clothing. Sunglasses became fashion for all as students dangled them from their necklines and pockets, put them on strings around their necks, and finally wear- ing them day or night. Through this fashion craze however, tradition did survive. Jeans, sweats, gym shorts, t- shirts, sweaters, and penny loafers certainly played a major role on cam- pus. Guys and girls cut their hair shorter. Hair spray was replaced by gel, mousse, and styling spray. Highlights and foiling became more acceptable and adding a variety of colors. Farts moved from the center to one side or the other, showing a lot of asymmetri- cal styles. Some students, in attempts to voice their imaginations, invested in their tans during the winter months at local tanning salons. 2 Opening 4 Opening A New Focus 1985-86 brought a new focus on UW- Stout ' s campus. The student center has always been a place for students to go to congregate, study, watch a performer, shop, eat, play a video game, plan activities, and more. This year the center moved down the hill, and the new Memorial Student Center opened. The new center has a modem day look, with substantial improve- ments and expansions in comparison with the old student center. A patio was added to the Fawn to provide an ampitheater for outdoor performances when weather permit- ted. The Recreation Center added some new bowling alleys and pool tables and expanded to include a mini arcade. The Bookstore was upgraded and enlarged, replacing bookshelves with chrome grid walls and increasing its merchandise lines. Television monitors were installed throughout the Center to inform stu- dents of upcoming events and activi- ties. The Grandview Terrace replaced the former Snack Bar opening up their menu to include a variety of additional entres. Just outside the Grandview Terrace is the Terrace Shoppe which provides easy access for sweets and especially those famous union cookies. The old Printery and Information desk were replaced by the Service Center, providing a combination of services in one strategically located area. The Heritage Room replaced the old Presi- dents ' Room, adding a more elegant look with windows overlooking the Cobblestone Court. The Crystall Ball- room replaced the old Ballroom with a more glamorous touch including crystal chandeliers. Finally the Great Hall added a new focus to the Center, with the capacity to set-up for large groups along with a full stage making it very accommo- dating for speaker, concerts, and banquets. In 1985 and 1986 this facility certainly got a good workout. Many events that had perviously been held elsewhere moved to the Center this year. Par- ents ' Weekend was an excellent exam- ple. At one given time in the student center, parents and students could go to one of three performances, bowl, play pool, shop in the bookstore, look at exhibits, and eat in one of three areaS. Opening S A Change In Perspective As students pass through Stout, their perspective of the campus changes. As freshmen, the campus may have appeared enormous, with too many places to go and not enough direc- tions. As the adventure begins into the various areas, the campus becomes more and more familiar. It is no longer necessary to leave fifteen minutes early for classes for fear of getting lost. Cutting through the library and the student center is an obvious short cut for those below zero days. The Bookstore is not entered unless absolutely necessary during the first four days of classes. Eating solo in the commons is no longer a traumatic experience. The where- abouts of the Zooplex and the Car- riage house is general knowledge. The path behind Applied Arts does lead somewhere. Weekends begin on Thursday, not Friday. Off-campus housing lists are available in the S5A office. SSA stands for Stout Student Association. 1985 and 1986 brought about new challenges and adventures for our returning students, as well as new students. The new student center opened, testing the wits of students to find the hidden staircases at each entrance. The registration process was moved completely from the Field- house to Bowman Mail. The Business Administration building was com- pletely rearranged. Bulldozers went full speed across Broadway, opening up additional parking. The Math de- partment moved up the hill to the top of Harvey Mall. Stella s house was diminished to a pile of boards and Fourteenth Avenue was closed. The card catalog at the library is gone, now it ' s ALI5 or nothing. The mobile units housing the Tower Yearbook were sold Stout is constantly in a state of transi- tion, just about the time it comes into perspective, it changes in one aspect or another. 6 Opening Opening 7 8 Opening Lasting Impressions What do we think of when we think of Stout? The famous Stout Tower is of course symbolic but what are those lasting impressions, those moments we ' ll al- ways remember and always treasure? Each of us have different impressions and have shared different moments in 1985-86. Stout certainly provides am- ple activities and opportunities to make some lasting impressions. Remember those crazy stunts your friends pulled — the nice ' ' guy or girl your roommate so graciously set you up with, the part you got in the school play, signing that first lease and your apprehension, the flowers you got and still don ' t know where they came from, being stuck in Menomonie because of atrocious weather conditions, the first time you attempted to find that house on 11th Avenue West or was it north 11th Street, the day your first long dis- tance phone bill arrived, the roadtrip you took with your friends to visit friends at another campus, the test you scored a 100% on and then the one or two you failed, the first club meeting you attended, the day you made the football team, or meeting your roommate and realizing you had to live together for the next nine months. It ' s these kinds of things that seem so trivial, yet will be lasting with all of us as we look back in years to come as we remember what being at Stout was all about. Opt ' rliMH ' A View From Within Each of us, with our own unique perception, express our view in a different light. Stout definitely pro- vides a wealth of opportunity for expression, and 1985 and 1986 were no exception. The education and relationship formed this year were a basis for our individual creativity. Sporting events, student center enter- tainment, house parties and games at the recreation center were among those activities which have given us the chance to express our individuali- ty. Stout weekends, starting on Thurs- day, provide a lot of time for social growth. Activities like Homecoming Week only proved to expand our expressions. Diversity could be seen throughout the campus at any time. The car we drove, our style of dress, an off-beat hairdo, our course of study, different languages, a variety of opinions, and notable actions all contributed to the uniqueness of each individual. Stout became a melting pot. As each of us moved away from home, we brought with us certain views and expressions. During this year we test- ed some of our ideas. We tried new things, expanded our experiences, and developed new philosophies. We flaunted our identity. In the process of creating our new uniqueness, our views meshed with that of our peers, thus creating views from within Stout, as well as a view from each of us as individuals. When we leave Stout we will take with us a part of our peers and part of Stout. With Stout we will leave some of our views — a part of us. 10 Opening Opening 1 1 Photo donated by Jean noitcmun 12 Opening Another Dimension The city of Menomonie is yet another dimension to Stouts ' student ' s educa- tion. All of us come from different backgrounds. For some, Menomonie is a large metropolis, too big and congested, while there are others that think of Menomonie as a speck on the map too small to be called a city. What ever we think, it does have an impact on us. What ' s there to do in Menomonie? a most popular phrase we hear from Stout students. Menomonie ' s rich historic background offers students an array of culture, for example the Mabel Tainter Theater, a refurbished Victo- rian era theater where performances are still being held today. UW-Stout, together with Menomonie, recognizes the rich history with the recently refurbished Ichkleberger Hall, other- wise known as the Louise Smith Tain- ter Home, now housing the Stout Alumni and Foundation office. Menomonie has plenty to offer in the area of recreation as well. In 1985 and 86, students certainly took advantage of Menomonie ' s waterways, Lake Me- nomin and the Red Cedar River. Stu- dents made their tracks down the Red Cedar Trail by foot. Ski and Bicycle, sometimes stopping off in Irvington for some additional encouragement. Others avoided the trail and floated down the river by inner tube or pad- dled a canoe. Students got their use out of Lake Menomin by laying on the beach at Wakanda, and sailing in the summer and ice skating and snowmo- biling in the winter. Last of all, a real added dimension, we can ' t forget Menomonie ' s downtown. We ' ll remember Menomonie ' s down- town in a variety of ways — Long Island Iced Tea night at the Log Jam, a movie at the theater on Broadway, the Qyron at Ted ' s, high school stu- dents congregating outside Lee Drug, Beat the Clock at the Meet Market, the double dip at Jan ' s Ice Cream Parlor, dancing on the bar at the Spot, the late night pizza at Rocky ' s and cheese and crackers at Mel ' s happy hour. So as we look back, we can see that in 1985-86, Menomonie definitely had an impact on all of us, thus adding another dimension. Opening 13 Sense Of Direction Education is the primary reason UW- Stout exists, and 1985-86 offered plenty of it, all of which added to the student ' s sense of direction. We leam as much, if not more, outside of class as we do in. We saw many more directions than in the classroom alone. Stout offered students the chance to expand their horizons out- side the classroom. Many students gained valuable experience as they worked part-time at one of several locations on campus. This also gave students an opportunity to make some extra money and in some cases receive academic credit through inde- pendent studies or field experience. 1985-86 brought cultural opportuni- ties to campus as well, whether it was listening to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra or Flo Kennedy, watching films or going to the Pawn to see a performer. Finally, 1985-86 offered a host of activities for students to participate in. The Recreation Center was always available for a quick game of Centi- pede or a couple frames of bowling. Intermurals, activities like Homecom- ing and Winter Carnival, athletic events, and club programs all added to the students ' sense of direction. 14 Opening Opening 15 ISOptnlng Array Of Visions UW-Stout has always been known for its areas of specialization and 1985-86 proved to be no different. Along with the areas of specialization comes the rash stereotypes we associate with students in their respective majors. Probably the most noticeable is our Fashion Merchandise majors, some- times affectionately called, merchies. According to the stereo- type, fashion merchandising majors are the students that are never dress- ed in anything less than the latest fashions. Then there are the Psycholo- gy majors, no matter where they are, they have to be analyzing the minds of others. What about Art majors? If you ' re an Art major, you are sure to hang out on the third floor of Applied Arts, you are creatively dressed. And you must own a beret. Then there ' s the black pants and white shirt epidemic. This has got to be the Hotel and Restaurant Major. And if you are looking for a good place to go for dinner, ask a Hotel fit Restaurant major, they are sure to know. If you ' ve got a worn jean jacket and hiking boots, the stereotype says — Industrial Technology. Being an In- dustrial Technology major also means you like to spend your nights in the drafting lab and you must be mechanically inclined. And how about those students with the modem day kindergarten art covering their walls — Early Childhood majors. Although these are all gross generalizations and rash stereotypes, you ' ve probably heard at least a couple of them over the year. But Stout does have individu- ality, people with a variety of reasons for being here. This provided Stout with a mesh of individual views and an array of visions. Mis most recent book, Endless Enemies, ex- poses the dominant role of business enter- prises in the formation United States foreign policy. Homecoming Homecoming 1985 was full of oppor- tunities for Stout students and alumni. The theme Take a Chance gave all involved ample chances for a good time full of fun and laughs. Events included a Royalty Ice Cream Social, a chance to have fortunes told by Marcella Ruble in the Cobblestone Court, Skit Might with all the Home- coming couples, and a Pep Rally in the field house. And what would Home- coming be without the semi-formal Coronation Dance, this year with Bac- chus Lotus playing, the Saturday morning parade, and the football game. The Coronation dance brought the announcement of this years Home- coming King and Queen. This years opponent at the football game was UW-Platteville. The eventful week came to a close with an action packed Casino Might in the Qrandview Terrace Saturday night. But Homecoming didn ' t end here. Students from many campuses roadtripped to Stout to keep the Homecoming tradition alive. There may no longer be the Homecoming march to 1-94 but the students have found numerous ways to fill the gap. Students and non-students alike, with a few faculty incognito, swarmed downtown at night to wait in line to get into the Marion, Meet Market, etc. Every other student house had a barren or two tapped with many hous- es splurging for champagne break- fasts. 34 Homecoming Plays Whose Life is it Any- way? Saving Grace Oklahoma! October 10, UW-Stout ' s University Theater was 11, 12 busy this year, putting on three pro- December ductions. Saving Grace was the winter production, with performances De- cember 5th thru the 8th. And, on Parents Weekend, April 17th thru the 20th, the University Theater perform ed Rodgers Hammerstein ' s musica comedy, Oklahoma! . All involved ir the plays put in many long hard hours to make sure that the shows went on All the long hours however, paid off ir three very fine productions. 36 Plays Plays 37 The Pawn A source of entertainment for Stout students on Thursday. Friday, or Sat- urday nights is the Pawn. The Pawn, with its live entertainment, offers an alternative form of entertainment on Stout ' s campus. Performances this year included comedians, Stout com- munity talent nights, an Eau Claire exchange, and singers and musicians of various styles. The entertainment in the Pawn is sponsored by the Pawn Commission, a group of students interested in booking, publicizing, running sound equipment for and hosting the perfor- mers in the Pawn. They sponsor high quality professional performers and host a good time for all. 38 Pawn Pawn 39 Parents Weekend This year ' s Parents Weekend, April 18th thru the 20th, was a special one. It began Friday with the dedication of the new Memorial Student Center. Wind and rain hampered some of the leisurely strolling around the town characteristic of Parents Weekend but it didn ' t dampen the spirits. There were plenty of activities for students and their parents including conceits, plays, dinners at the Commons and Tainter Hall, Fashion shows and tour- ing the new Union and all other buildings on campus. Parents Week- end helps the students and parents get together to better understand each other and college life. This year was no exception, providing a chance for all to see what Stout can provide for students as well as what keeps the students busy when Mom and Dad aren ' t around. 40 Parent Weekend Parents Weekend 41 Bands . . . What I Like About You is the song for the Romantics. They played this song and many of their popular songs for UW-Stout students. Bands such as Bad Boy also helped rock the stage during the 1985-86 school year and Baccus Lotus Played in the Great Mall for this year ' s Homecoming Corona- tion Dance. i V 42 Bands . . . and more bands. Builds 4S Winter Fun Winters here at Stout can get to be very long but the students here find ways to enjoy the cold winter months. Events such as Winter Carnival Week, which ran February 2nd through the 6th, got students moving with events like the Twister contest. Other out- door events sponsored by various groups added to the list of winter activities available to help get peo- ple ' s minds off of winter. Such things as broom ball and volleyball gave a taste of summer to the students at Stout. Having things like this to do, makes for a fun rather than a glum winter here in Menomonie. 1 • 4£ Winter Tun night Life The night life opportunities at UW- Stout rage from a wild night on the town to a quiet night at the State Theater to catch the latest movies. Weekends in Menomonie start on Thursday night and the places where students can be found are the Log Jam for Long Island Iced Tea night or the Marion Bar for Green Bottle night. You will also find many competitive pool sharks and bowlers in the Memorial Student Center during the weekend. not everyone hits the town at night. Sara Holder Psychology Art Black River Falls, WI Member - Martial Arts Club Member - Wisconsin Horse Show Council Recipient - Chancellor ' s Award Published Recognition - national Academy of Art UW - Stout has given me a lot of freedom in designing my own program with psychology. The program was very open and willing to combine my art interest which is very important to me. I think Stout enables students to begin classes directly in their major as soon as they begin school. This gives them a better insight early on in their education — I think that ' s important. 132 Profiles David C. Looking back on this year, we learned so many things from our mistakes as well as the mistakes of others. A lot of long hours of hard work have gone into this book, and it holds many strong memories for us. We hope you will treasure it as much as we do for years to come.
