UNIVERSITY SPEAKER SERIES Ralph Nader and Frances Fitzgerald were among the five outstanding speakers presented by the newly formed University Speakers Series Commission. Also presented in this successful first season were Paul Ehrlich - author of the best selling paperback The Population Bomb ; Daniel Ford - speaking on the dangers of nuclear power and Gloria Steinem - America ' s fore most activist in the feminist movement. The first speaker was Ralph ader. America ' s well known social critic spoke on Energy Monopolies and Energy Consum- ers: Who ' s Winning? He spoke of the growing imperialism of multinational corporations and government. Pulitzer Prize Winner Frances Fitgerald was the other speaker presented fall semester. She talked of the changes that affect history textbooks and explained some of the information found in her book America Revised which criticizes the Publishing Houses for changing textbooks and their accounts of history in order to sell more books. , 18 HOMECOMING ' 80 OouLse it Abuse it — you lose it was one theme for the UW-Stout 1980 Homecoming. Students were warned that the fate of future Homecom- ings depended on how they conducted them- selves this year and, in a letter to the Stoutonia, Chancellor Swanson urged students to maintain themselves. Because of problems relating to crowd and traffic control — the annual Home- coming parade was cancelled. The Chi Lambda fraternity was then granted a permit for a small parade limited to the campus area — but these plans also fell through. In spite of or perhaps because of all the negative advance publicity surrounding Homecoming, the weekend went quite smoothly. The theme for the skits and lobby decorations was Bluegrass is no country for the pwinters and the Bluedevils proved this by defeating Stevens Point in the Saturday afternoon geime. 20 COUNTRY FOR THE POINTERS First row: Bri n Niehaus. Mgr. 22 FINISH SEASON 6-4 ANOTHER ONE Led by their radar defense, which was ranked 1st in the Conference and 2nd Na- tionally, UW-Stout held a share of the Con- ference lead before dropping a heartbreak- ing 10-7 loss to LaCrosse in their finale. The Bluedevils got off to a quick start by winning their 1st four games. They knocked off Winona (Minnesota) 27-0. Stout followed that win with a 21-0 whitewash of Superior. Eau Claire was next on the agenda and Stout used their radar defense to defeat the Bluegolds 13-7. Mcnomonie won their fourth in a row when they posted their third shutout in four games, a close 6-0 defeat over Osh- kosh. The dam broke against Whitewater as the Bluedevils dropped their first game 24-7. Despite giving up 21 points to Ste- vens Point, the Bluedevils emerged victori- ous as the offense came up with 35 tallies. Stout took their next game on the chin as Plattcville handed the Bluedevils a 14-3 defeat and their second Conference loss. Suffering a possible lowdown. Stout was then clobbered by St. Norberts 21-0 in a non-conference clash. Stout was not to be counted out though, as they upset national- ly ranked River Falls 30-8. A win in their final season clash over LaCrosse would have given the Bluedevils a share of the conference title but, that was not the case as LaCrosse dropped the Bluedevils 10-7 despite being outgained 2-1 in tota yard- age. Stout finished the year 6-4; 5-3 in the conference. The offense posted 14.9 points per game, while the Radar defense held opponents to just 10.5 points per game. 10 BLUE DEVILS NAMED TO ALL CONFERENCE 1. YEARBOOK STAFF This year ' s Tower yearbook is dedicated to Glori Hinck, the associate editor, for all the time and hard work she put into it. This appreciation comes from a long year of mishaps and the determination to make this year ' s book a success. Making a yearbook does not go without its problems. Dur- ing the year negatives were ripped off, and deadlines crept up too quickly. Our staff worked to upgrade and build a better reputation for the Tower. It was our goal to give the yeeirbook a better image and we hope we have. We would like to apologize to the groups whose pictures did not appear (including the yearbook staff) because two rolls of negatives were stolen from the photo lab. Many thanks to Gary Dinecn for the pictures we most desparately needed and to all those people who bought books. Also, special gratitude to John Murphy for designing the cover and division pages.
