Text from Pages 1 - 140 of the 1978 volume:

2 6 7 12 13 14 ■ what would Homecoming be without all the activities? 4mong the many events prior to Homecoming were the 3rd Annual Home Economics Conference, The Miss Atrocious Contest, and our delicious Brat Sale. Residence Halls par ticipated in the fun too—HKMC had floor contests for a meal at the Knapp House. The Missouri Woodland Band captured the attention of many as they strung out tunes at the Pawn. But Homecoming wouldn ' t be Homecoming without the parade, the coronation, the game, and the Dance — not to mention the parties! Being uptown, as many know, was wall to wall PEOPLE. While some were living it up after a hard day ' s work, our policemen were busy controlling a riot and making 75 arrests. Even so, the whole week was something to remember. 30 32 23 24 27 28 The Blue Devils ' fire was put out with unsuccessful attempts at a victory. But nevertheless, the team continued to fight hack to show they still had the spirit! TENNIS: A SMASHING SPORl VOLLEYBALL TEAM DOES THE BUMP Serve, bump, volley, set, spike— the smashing game of volleyball! 33 34 THE KICKERS Ever see feet move faster ttian fhose of Fred Astaire? Then take a look at our Soccer team, kick ' ;ng fhe ball, heading for the goal, and using all sorts of strategy to get there. 36 37 I WOMEN— ON THE COURT Passing, dribbling, running and shooting against guarding, rebounding, and intercep- ting — the strategy ior winning the game. 39 FIN MEN Here they come— the ' ' Flippers of Stout— diving, stroking, kicking and gliding their way fo vfcfoiy. 40 [ 41 HORSING AROUND Exercise and concentration, both a necessary part of working out; whether performing floor routines or on the many pieces of apparatus — the rings, pommel ho rse, horizontal bar, parallel bar and vaulting. What an invigorating sport! I PUCKSTERS Icing, holding, checking, and charging are descriptive of the fastest game — Ice Hockey. The Blue Devil Ice Machine hold their games in the Dunn County Ice Arena. SWISH! 45 MAT MEN OFF AND RUNNING ADMINISTRATION Responsibility rests in the hands of these four men: Chancellor Swanson, Vice Chancellor Face, Dr. Sommers and Dean Wood. They are responsible to the regents, the U.W. system and, above all, the students at Stout. 51 STUDENTS Rise and shine for another day of listen- ing, writing, reading and studying. Always a challenge, always a chore, but in the end you ' ll know even more. 32 53 GREEKS. . . have changed, they ' re no fonger molding people fo fit a partkular group. Parties, Homecoming, Alumni get-togethers, Greek week, Pledging, Philanthropic ac- tivities, and Work projects — all those are part of Greek life. Greeks, are always a part of UW-Stout. They do not dissolve as easily as a dorm floor, but live on to give Stout more dimension during and after their college years. 56 57 HALLOWEEN Goofy, bloody, unusual, dramatic; that ' s what it ' s all about — Halloween! PAWN for a little relaxation and a place to eat and chat, students gather at the Pawn, for some mellow music, drop on down fri- day and Saturday evenings. 61 DEBATE 62 UPTOWN Looking for people, action and a good time? Uptown is osf where you ' ll find it. All over you ' ll see people dancing, playing foosbail and pool, and just hav- ing an all-around great time. 43 64 63 NEW POINTERS FOR THE FOOD SYSTEM The beginning of the 1977 school year saw a change in its food system. Computerized food I.D. ' s replaced the food coupons. The only change second semester was that the value of one point went to 5c instead of 25c, so students have found this system to be a lot less of a hassle. And at the end of the fall semester and into 1978, students were allowed to use their food I.D. ' s in the bookstore. 66 THE SERPENT The Serpent, by Jean Claude- von Itallie was presented by the Stout University Theatre. In the play von Itallie mingles Biblical material v ith the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. He suggests that the Serpent is the impuke vv fh n man that makes him break the limits set on him, whereas God is an idea invented by man to set limits on himself. 67 48 71 72 73 TOM CHAPIN Tom Chapin, an exiting and moving musician. His concert this year was presented in the field house to more than one thousand. He had each and everyone in the palm of his hand. The comedy team Curley and Edmonds performed also. 74 75 PREREGISTRA TION Preregistration — a surprise! Elements of hang ups, hold ops, and give ups. The biggest surprise seems fo come when all the class cards are in your hand. You finally made it through preregistration. 77 SING NOEL The spirit of Christmas come o rve early this year when the music department gave its annual Christmas concert. Carols from all over the world were sung; a special treat was the appearance of Santa C ous. 79 JOYOUS NOEL Christmas means many things to many people. Familiar things to the people of Menomonie were the street decorofions, the familiar carols, and all the snow. 80 MINISTRY The Ministry, a vital part of the Stout Community, is always there to spread the word of God arid help you in times of need. NOW FOR THE NEWS Our student run radio station, WVSS, brings everyday, up-to-date news and music that you want to hear. STOUTONIA The Stoutonia, published every Thursday, informs the students of the latest campus news along with editorials, entertainment, sports, ads, and other odds and ends. 84 SSA Sfout Student Association, advised by Dean Wood, is the governing body of Stout students. Their responsibility in- dudes financing of student activities and trying to fulfill the wishes and needs of the student body. TOWER A small, but productive, Tower staff this year worked to put together memories to look ba k on in years to come. 87 GRADUATION 77 That moment that we ' ve stnved for ts finally here. Good times and good friends won ' t be forgotten though. There ' s still more in store. Look out world, here we come! learn form the past. . . live for today. . . hope for tomorrow. Dreams of the past become lessons of today and lead to goals for tomorrow. Reach for those goals and you ' ll succeed. The rewards are great. The ♦ Alaskan pipeline was approved, Kissinger ' s nego- k I tiations in the Middle East finally resulted in an accord W while the Republican Administration was increasingly • r M under fire in the Watergate investigations. Ameri- ' A cans were horrified at the kidnapping of Patty Hearst and amazed at the resignation of Nixon ' s top aides, and also intrigued by Mariner lO ' s k fly-by of Mercury, Hank Aaron ' s 715th home W M run, and Russia ' s deporting of Solzhenitsyn. H V In July, the American political crisis came to a head with the subpoening of Nixon ' s tapes his resignation in August, and Ford ' s pardon in September. Finally, Ford approved pri- vate ownership of gold and the Oil Embargo was lifted. 1 1 - r The World Around Us 1975 In 1975 the United States began its adjust- ment to a world where events seemed to out- run our capacity to absorb them. While Rocke- feller began investigations into the misdeeds of the CIA and Ford announced the U.S. was in a recession, the Bicentennial celebrations officially began. In April, Vietnam again entered the news as the re- maining U.S. personnel had to be evacuated from Saigon. Meanwhile, New York City w as in the midst of financial crisis. The danger of aerosol sprays to the atmosphere, an assassination at- tempt on Ford, the UN declaration of Zionism as a form of racism, and the dictatorial emergency in India virtre other nevreworthy events. % .J ;5 i: N r f 1976 America demonstrated its capacity to adapt in 1976. Old faces reappeared and new faces stepped forward to provide new hopes. The Win- ter Olympics, Surveyor ' s Mars photos, the national political conventions and the election of Jimmy Carter dominated the news and TV screens. The U.S. began to celebrate our 200th birthday. Marijuana ■ was decriminalized in California, a new investi- gation of the Kennedy and King assassinations was begun, and in Congress a new scandal began as 3 result of Elizabeth Ray ' s revelations. Mean- while, old faces made one last appearance as Eldridge Cleaver returned to the U.S. for trial, Mao died in China, and ftS ' j SMB ' ' onq returned to New E ' MM York in an oil tanker. ,1 9 ' - tv. The World Around Us 1977 Extremes in weather continued in ' 77. East- ern blizzards resulted in floods, natural gas shortages and blackouts. Western drought bred rampant fires and water rationing. Newly-elected President Carter faces such issues as energy con- servation, the Concorde, the B-1 bomber cruise mis- sile controversy, Panama Canal and LaetrtI debates. Idi Amin, Roots and black independence brought  Africa into the news. To many, the deaths of Elvis and Groucho signaled the end of an era. Despite mass kidnappings, the KLM Pan Am k crash, Washington imprisonments and gay IHl rights tensions, hopes for the future appear ed in movies like Star Wars, the Alaskan pipeline, the Space Shuttle and improved Cuban relations. 1 J
