Out When your work at Stout is completed, the preparation for your chosen profes- sion will not be fin- ished. Though we feel that your train- ing has laid a fine foundation upon which to build a successful career, if your studies stop, few promotional op- portunities will be found along the road you travel. Laboratory and shop demands up- on your time have been heavy during your four years at Stout. Because it was necessary to become proficient at many skills, little time was left for cultural studies. Further preparation in the broader fields of education is essential to winning respect and confidence in any community. The study of history, litera- ture, and the social sciences should absorb a considerable portion of your leisure time, for without this knowledge your civic interests and contacts will be materially limited. Social contacts are important to you who desire to influence the opinions of the people to whom you are responsible. Familiarity with the home life, the problems, and the ideals of the community in which you serve should help in establishing respect and the rapport necessary between the school and the home. Effective teaching and intelligent leadership, whether in or out of the classroom, have never been more necessary than they will be dur- ing the initial period of your professional activities. May your performance reflect credit upon your Alma Mater. BURTON E. NELSON
