lm To the Class of 1938: I wonder . . . Has Stout given you a proper background for a successful teaching career? If you have the same teacher philosophy that characterized educators of forty-five, twenty- f. . . 1V9, or even five years ago, you are not prepared to do the teaching demanded during the next five years. New times demand new mea never truer than it is today. If we of 1938 still feel that we are delegated to -teach only literature, science, mathematics, or trades, we are far from the mark. Here in Amenca new problems face us and must be solved, better by teachers than by politicians and office holders. sures and new men , quoted from civil war literature, was Recently individual liberties were in danger. Genuine democracy is an issue. There is danger that inherent rights guaranteed by the framers of our constitution are being sold by millions for a mess of pottage . Individual effort, initiative, and determination are be- ing weakened. The power of government is becoming a menace because individual convic- tions are being dulled by state and national aids. Thinking is being done for us, not by us. We need to teach and we need to cultivate a deep regard for democracy, to develop qualities of character and methods of action peculiarly necessary in a democracy and to stimulate an active interest in the development of democratic ideals and a love for those liberties possible only in a democratic form of government. No emergency is great enough no mis- fortune deep enough to justify the surrender of democratic ideals as America has known them these hundred and fifty years. Teachers of America have a sacred duty to perform. They may make it possible for the children of America to enjoy the liberties characteristic of America. lllll lll HE UH
