Where the pines have fallen on the hillside The green needles burning in the sun Make sweet incense in the vacant spaces Along the run Of the rill; and by the rill side Rushes waver and shine; In remote and shad) places Winter green abounds and interlaces With the twinfiower vine.

A tree whose hungry month is prest Against the sweet earth s flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear A nest of whins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.
