Not to explode such a quaint image, but have you had a chance to glimpse the power-packed modern day descendents of the Gay Nineties shells? Virginiats entry in the intercollegiate scene, dominated by Washington and Navy, can be found out Bar- racks Road at the Rivanna Reservoir most fall afternoons and spring dawns and twilights - pulling hard in practice sprints, or running and running and running to maintain physical condition. The glamor days like those of the 72 Olympics, in which former UVa team member Monk Terry rowed stroke, and current UVa oarsman Paul Wilson received alternate status are few and far between. 27 The several spring races including those at DC, where spectators hang off Key Bridge and cluster along the shores of the Potomac near Thompson Boat House, at Dadvale, and at the SIRA hardly make up for the prepara- tion ior so it seemsy. The schedule usually includes stiff competition from Marietta and Navy, too. So, what makes people get up at 5:00 am. on very early spring mornings to practice on icy waters, and give up spring break? What makes wearing the orange and blue shorts and jerseys worth the effort of each power stroke, when the tide and wind are going contrary to the course ior when you've partied the night beforei? What prompts the coaches to give freely of their 28 time for this club, which is not funded by the Athletic Department; rather, by the dues each participant pays? And what is it that over- comes the inertia of stillness to become sliding movement produced by the bodies working in unision? Oarsmen would have difficulty finding a ra- tionale for this irrational sport, but to get an idea about the . answers to these riddles maybe you should ask them all - in the four, in the lightweight eight, and in the junior and varsity eights. As the '73-'74 captain Trenny Walker reflected maybe it's the relax and enjoy yourself attitude. But, then since when are power tens relaxing? e Ann Burlin u' .4 i 9 - 'ilt was worth it, Ricky Bergland said about his three years on the bench, before his emergence as a star of last years team. And in this day of Play me or trade me , few would refute this as a unique attitude. A prep- school AII-American, he came to Virginia, hoping not so much to start, but to star, yet the former became his most formidable task. Ricky led the team in scoring last year, earning more points than the person he played behind for three years, Tom Duquette. What makes this team so consistently good? . . . At Virginia, lacrosse, despite its consistent rating in the top five, despite its national attention, is not the big-time sport that basketball and football are. There are no scholarships given here, even though they are given at a few other schools. The pro- gram here reIies on the closeness of the team members and the attraction of the school it- self, and probably most important, the past success of the team. For four years in a row, the team has made the NCAA playoffs, with one national title, and two years in a row it has won the Hero's Tournament in Baltimore. With seven straight victories at the start of last year and four straight from the year before, the eleven victories set a school lacrosse record for the longest winning .. . P. A45! 3 ' i5 v.1 . . .4 t 23139.3Ql3'imf'3 'L' '39.? i.v,y NEEDED streak. Of course, every great team has its superstars. For us they were Tom Duquette and Bruce Mangels. Duquette, whose moves were compared to some sort of athletic adap- tation of a dance, was a four-year All- American. Mangels, considered by many to be one of the best ever to play the bruising position of crease defense, was a first-team AlI-American last year, and one of the tri-cap- tains, along with Duquette and midfielder Jim Ulman. But facts about personal feats dont get to the heart of this team. The, coach, an easy rider of the easiest sort, has few rules. There is no PMA program on this team; he leaves this to the players. For lacrosse is not a sport to most of the players, but a Iife-style. Most grew up playing the sport from grade school. Duquette and Ulman work for the STX Company iwho manufacture the plastic sticksi as design consultants, and they wrote the instruction manual for stringing the sticks. You cant instill love for a sport; you either have it or you don't, and this team does. This is what makes Virginia Lacrosse what it is. - Tom Albrecht 31 nV s.snx - ksss r nrvh xxx Q 32 35 37 38 00014.9. . . V I 9 '.. There are many ways to travel in a cave, ranging from bellycrawling through sticky mud to dangling from a muddy rope. Mud is the one common feature everywhere, even in the occasional dry cave. One does not walk through a cave, unless, of course, one is lucky enough to be in Mammoth Cave. Perhaps the most spectacular aspect of CAVE CLUB caving is ropework. Special rapelling and as- cending techniques have been developed for drops which may be as long as four hundred feet. There can be no experience to compare with rapelling slowly down the center of a carved and fluted domepit, illuminated by the light of a single carbide lamp. Why do we do it? We don't know anything except that we like it. Maybe we're all a little bit crazy. - Ginny Hendry 81 RIFLE 8: PISTOL CLUB PEP BAND 84 KARATE CLUB 85 86 87 THE CAiAQt-T 84th YEAR UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, CHARLC THE CAxng DAILY FOUNDED 1890 For lwn' Irv arc no! ajiuid Io follow the Imlll wherever it mar lead. nor to mlcmlr' any error m long as rcaxun is left free In rmnhar il. -Mr Jefferson Timothy Bruce Wheeler Edimr 'in-Chief William Burr Bardenwerper e Patrick Clifford Graney ill lzdilorial Ediror Managing Editor Mary Bland Love Business Manager Tradition Now in its 85th year, The Cavalier Daily, or the iCDC as our staff members affectionately refer to it tor, to use the expletive of many irate irate readers, iithat ragiii, has become something of a tradition at the University. And, like most traditions here, the CD is venerated for some of the wrong reasons, damned for too many of the right ones, and generally taken for granted by almost everyone. Yet, judging from the flood of complaint that pours in when, for one reason or another, some students are unable to find a copy of that dayis CD, we know just how much that word tradition means; since 1890, The Cavalier Daily has been relied upon to provide news and announcements of what is going on in that microcosm known as the University community. Part of our responsibility for maintaining that tradition. however, requires that the Cd alter its outlook and scope to keep pace with the ever-changing needs and interests of the burgeoning community. HNews is the disruption of the status quo.n and as a newspaper, the CD has been active not only in reporting the changes around us, but has itself undergone a transformation from within. Not so long ago, the CD was little more than a fraternity newsletter, where a tight little clique of iiU-men whiled away their leisure hours dabbling in amateur journalism. Today, a new spirit breathes amid the chattering teletype machines and clacking typewriters--it can perhaps best be defined as a drive towards professionalism, though it is certainly something more than that. More than the striving for professional journalism--a commendable goal in itself-The Cavalier Daily today does not attempt to proselytize any particular way of life on the entire community but seeks to accurately reflect the diversity of lifestyle and the openness with which the University has recently been infused. And if. in the process. the reader tas well as the CD staff memberi learns something, or adds a whole new facet to his education, well, that is just another tradition at this University, where we are not afraid to follow the truth, wherever it may lead... CD Staff: Up By J OHN EPPS The only big difference between members of the Cavalier Daily staff and the rest of the student body is, instead of reading the CD with 51 e e p y . blurred eyes in their first morning class. staff members read the paper with sleepy, blurred eyes in the late hours of the night and skip their early morning classes. tand their late morning classes, and their early afternoon classes, eth The paper appeared at Cabell Hall and elsewhere around the Grounds about 135 times last year, so thatis a minimum of 135 missed classes for each staff member. Multiply that by the 80 members of the staff and you might come up with the correct figure for class non-attendance by CD staff ER DAI LY ETESVILLE,SUNDAY, MAY 19, 1974 Late All The Time NUMBER on members. 0 wonlt go into what that number may be since my mother will probably read this yearbookJ We of the staff do not feel too badly about this, however, since we know what a trauma it would be if Doonesbury and the crossword did not appear each and every morning for our readers. Despite the humor, the CD is taken quite seriously up in the attic of Newcomb Hall. The constant desire for good, solid, professional journalism is never-ending. We are more aware than anyone else that sometimes we fall short, even with the haranguing of the Managing Board. The rewards come from the striving and, in particular, those times when we do succeed. Our commitment to professional journalism requires long hours and certain sacrifices. From when the first staff member begins to work atl pm. to whenever the paper leaves our offices for its nightly journey to The Culpeper Star-Exponent, the Cavalier Daily offices are constantly manned with hard-working students, researching and writing stories or selling ad space to local merchants. Every person in the offices has an important function to perform and , if he or she lets up, no matter how unimpressive his or her title may be, it could affect the appearance of the next days paper, as consistency in composition and production is tantamount to good reporting. The afternoon shift is responsible for getting the copy for the next days issue written and edited. The night shift sees to it that those stories appear on the page where they are supposed to and that the paper looks neat Elapsed time from start to Finish takes anywhere from eight to ll hours. From ads, to news, to sports, to features, someone can almost always be found working in the offices at any time of the day or night.'1he work is continually hectic and more than once each member asks himself: is it all worth it? But when the paper hits the stands every day without f ail, and when almost everyone at the University is seen reading the product of your labors, the answer must invariably be: yes. CDIJim Brunetti Whether in the back room or the front office, the Cavalier Daily staff member must attend to a myriad of details each day. One mistake the night before becomes 12,000 the next morning. CDIJIm Brunetti gmmedaraiiun a weekly newsmagazine Vol. 1, No. 1 90 The New Publica tion Marks It '3 Anniversary A new University-wide publication made its debut on Founder's Day last April. The Declaration, a weekly news magazine, published three times in the Spring. Beginning with a 24-page orientation issue this Fall, it continues to publish every Friday. Founded to meet the perceived demand for a fresh approach to news coverage, The Declaration explores events and issues of particular interest to the faculty and administrators as well as the students. A faculty column appears each issue. During its first year The Declaration encountered many obstacles, some unexpected, in establishing a new ogranization on the Grounds. The Shack, a closet like structure behind the EvaIuation Research Center on Rugby Road served as home for the news magazine's inaugural Spring and Fall issues. Full erdged offices in the Peabody Hall basement were given to The Declaration several weeks into the Fall semester, physically acknowledging the news magazine's legitimacy as an extra-curricular organization. The offices serve as headquarters for the news magazine. All composing is done by the staff members at the Jefferson Printing Co. in Charlottesville. The Valley Banner in Elkton prints 10,000 copies of the Declaration each week. Acceptance by the University community grew steadily through the year. People who occasionally stumbled on the 'different newspaper' came to an- ticipate the publication each week with its expanded coverage. As an alternative media, The Declaration firmly established itself throughout the University community. Its future contribution toward more comprehensive communication is insured. UNIVERSITY LIFE UVA STRUGGLES AGAINST EFFECTS OF EXPANSION The University can no longer be what it was because it is growing. Expanding. Absorbing the bigger-the-better, firstest-with-the-mostest mentality of the twentieth century. We can no longer argue the question of whether or not the University will expand; now it is only a matter of when and how. We as students, faculty and alumni can only try to prevent the destruction of the fraternal small college atmosphere that has made the Grounds such a great place to be. Much of the controversy in and around Mr. Jefferson's University centers on esthetic problems. Before scholarship and nature could peacefully coexist l we even used to build side- walks around the trees l, but today we fight to keep University Avenue small; we work to put grass back in Mclntire Amphitheatre; we struggle against an attempt to keep parking meters off McCormick Road; and we resist covert attempts to change the Lawn into a giant concrete slab. Although the apparent insensi- tivity of the administration to the emotional in- timacy of the University is disturbing, there are more severe problems in our academical village. In a school of 12,000 people, students lose touch with faculty, and traditions, such as the Honor System, are jeopardized. It appears that we are becoming a diploma mill. Even the quality of life seems to be in a state of degradation. The student population boom has created a seller's market for housing in 218 '5 j PU: . ex? , 'w 1 .EH SE; Charlottesville. The situation is so desperate that anything with four walls and ceiling, no matter how leaky or cracked, has become a $175-a-month quality apartment. The University has moved to ease the problem, but, as with most central bureaucratic efforts, the problem is only complicated further. The failure to deal with expansion effectively is no one's fault. The administration thinks that it has the interests of the University at heart, and Housing has good intentions, but from the students point of view, the official position seems callous and unjust. The case in point is the Copeley Ill project. It was late August, as the story goes, before Mr. Main was notified that there would be a housing shortage. Spring and Summer had twenty per- cent more rain than normal, so three buildings that would house graduate students would not be completed by September first. A thirty day extension was granted by the University, and Housing was granted an instant problem. Hous- ingls solution - putting the orphans into resi- dent staff accommodations a raised no severe problems in the upperclass dorms, but sparked a strong outcry from the first year R. A.'s who claimed that the graduate guests impaired their functioning as counselors. Many students, first year in particular, hesitated to talk to their counselors about the problems and pressures of dorm life with a roommate present. Neither side wanted its privacy invaded nor its sched- ules interrupted, so both sides took action by finding other places to stash the dislo- cated graduate students. Peti- tions were circulated and ac- tion was taken to see that it would not happen again; how- ever, the result and the general comment are still the same: It was such a hassle - I just don't want to go through it again . -Mike Mclvor 219 AROUND AND ABOUT THE GROUNDS PLEASE ECOLOG Y FAIRAND MILD TODAY. . . 222 WITH NO CHANCE OF RAIN , I I . Wood, Ill The eleven members of the Honor Com- . . fair and just trial? The Honor Committee regrets to announce that a student from the College of Arts and Sciences has been dismissed from the University for a breach of the Honor System. The offense was cheating on an organic chemistry test. The accused had altered at test paper, and submitted it for re-grading. After being confronted by four fellow students. the accused requested a trial, and was subsequently found guilty by the Honor Committee. Recently I had the opportunity - one which is open to all students - to tape an honor trial. In the following paragraphs I shall try to dispel the mystery associated with the Honor Com- mittee and the menacing trial room. prepare questions. An open discussion mittee sat at one long table. The accusors and their counsel were at a table to the right ' and in front of the Committee; the accused and his counsel were at an adjacent table to theleh. The Chairman of the Committee explained that the trial would follow parliamentary procedure. He introduced the members of the Committee and all others involved in the trial. The counsel for the accusors made an opening statement in which he read the ac- cusation and outlined the points of his argument. An opening statement was given by the counsel for the accused. The accusors testified that they were shown the chemistry tests involved in the alleged violation - al- tering the test before submitting it for regrading. And also that they had asked the accused for an explanation. They were cross- examined closely by the counsel for the ac- cused, and Xerox copies of the tests involved were received in evidence as exhibits. The teacher of the Chemistry class was presented as a witness and questioned by each counsel. The accused student answered the accusa- tion and was questioned by the counsel for the accusors. The Committee then recessed to review the evidence that had been presented and to period followed in which both counsels and Committee members asked questions. The representative from the Medical School was the first to be recognized. ttWhen did you turn in the test for regrading? The Friday after the test. Again the Med student: Did you not think it strange that there were so many answers marked wrong that were right? No, sometimes the graders make mis- takesf' Did you feel rushed in resubmitting the test? Yes, I thought it was due that day. The accused was then questioned by the Nursing School representative and then by other members of the Committee. The members of the Committee posed questions that were at once succinct and comprehen- sive. They sought an understanding beyond the factual circumstances, a comprehension of the individual's intent. At the conclusion of the questioning, the Chairman turned to the accused and asked, Sir, do you feel you have had a fair and just trial? He answered, Yes. Had he answered no, the discussion and questioning would 257 . . no dramatic presentation . . . have continued. Each counsel then sum- marized his case and the Committee recessed to reach a verdict. A four-fifths vote by the Committee is necessary for a guilty verdict. For a member to vote guilty, he must be confident that the act actually occured, that the accused had the intent to gain at another's expense, and that the act was so dishonorable as to be considered reprehen- sible in the eyes of the students now at the University. As the Committee deliberated, the ac- cusors and counsel talked in an adjacent room. An attempt was made at casual conver- sation. The accused nervously drummed his fingers, tapping out the minutes. After almost an hour, the Chairman came out and called the accused, the accusors and the counsel back into the trial room. There was no dramatic presentation of the verdict. After everyone was seated. the Chairman stood and turned to the accused, The Honor Committee finds you guilty. You will no longer attend classes at the Uni- versity and will leave the vicinity of the Uni- versity within 24 hours. He explained that the minutes of the trial would be open for inspection and outlined the procedure for ap- pealing on good cause. His intense, deliber- 258 ate manner underscored the difficulty of his task telling someone that he had been dis- missed from the University. There were no hand shakes or congratulations. The com- mittee stood and left without further discus- sion. Only the accused, his counsel and the Chairman remained. The Chairman offered the help and support of the Committee through letters of recommendation and ex- planation to aid the accused in finding an ac- ceptable college to attend. The trial procedure described is factual. It was found to be fair. The accused had been given complete disclosure of the evidence prior to the trial. There were no surprise wit- nesses or evidence. The trial was not ham- pered by formal rules of evidence or procedure. Facts were presented objectively to assure the Honor Committee of a clear and accurate account of the alledged Honor Violation. At no time were words such as your Honor , the court , prosecution , or defendent used. Secrecy was not used to create an awesome, mysterious Committee. Secrecy was used only to protect the individual ac- cused of an Honor Violation. - Anthony Caputy THE CINDEFlELLA PRESIDENT TAKES A BOW I cannot rest from travel; I will drink Life to the lees. One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. - Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Ulysses Enough has been said during the past fif- teen years about Mr. Shannon's performance as President of the University. It would be much more interesting to see who Mr. Shannon is, to see what he believes and enjoys, to see what his closest family and ad- ministrators feel for him. There is a great deal of difference between a student leader's analysis of the President's ability to com- municate, and twelve year old Lois Shannonis description of her father at the supper table. Very few people had expected Edgar Shannon to be selected as the new president when, in February of 1958, he emerged from Pavilion VIII with the Rector and former Pres- ident Colgate Darden. Mr. Frank Finger, standing ready to play North Carolina music on the carillon in honor of an expected ap- pointee from that state, was baffled. He had prepared no music concerning the US. Navy or Lord Tennyson. Finally he rang out a chorus of Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. He was indeed a Cinderella president, says Raymond Bice, now Mr. Shannon's adminis- trative assistant, a relatively obscure as- sociate English professor - and besides that, a graduate of Washington and Lee and a Presbyterian. Mr. Frank Berkeley, one of the choice few involved in the selection proceedings, was not at all surprised by the committee's choice. We were told by the presidents of other universities that we should not search for a man of distinction to fill a position of this kind, he said, but should look for quality in- stead. The day you make him President of the University of Virginia,' they said, the will be just as distinguished as he can be.' As I remember, Mr. Shannon was above the other 160 nominees from the very beginning. Mr. Shannon's first few years in office seem to have been dominated more by what he was than by what he did, and although the old rivalry with Washington and Lee has all but died today, it was a long time before the alumni could get used to having an old enemy for their President. W8tL needs a President too, an alumnus once confronted Mrs. Shannon. Why couldn't he have gone down there? And even though he didnt real- ize it as he made his appointments, local gossip was quick to point out that many members of Mr. Shannon's early staff were either Presbyterians or in the Naval Reserve, or both. What the Universityis President actually did, however, did not seem to become impor- tant to the students until a few years ago. 259 when administrators throughout the country were confronted with co-education, expan- sion, and student unrest. As for coeducation, Mr. Shannon had been strongly for it all along, according to Mr. Bice. He has a great sense of justice, and feels genuinely that we shouldnlt discriminate on any basis. Still, it was suggested by some that the President was influenced in the decision by his wife and five daughters, but 260 'the pneerent has a BOX, you know . . . Mrs. Shannon denies that. Was he ever sorry about having only daughters? If Edgar ever had an ounce of disappointment, he never showed it to me, Eleanor Shannon declares in her Sweet Briar accent. I would just tease him and tell him, he went to a men's prep school and a men's college, and became president of a men's university, and the Good Lord thought he needed to be educated about women! Mrs. Shannon refers to the pervasive ex- pansion issue as a problem of success at- tributing the tripling of the student population to the rising prestige of higher education all over the country. Fifteen years ago we had trouble filling the class, she recalls almost wistfully. I really can say with feeling that Edgar does not want the University to be big. But I don't think you can be dogmatic about that, because the question of size shouldn't come before what you're trying to do. What we are trying to do, she says, is achieve na- tional academic stature. According to Mr. Shannon's closest administrators, at least, our president has been successful in this above all things. A much more touchy issue, at least as far as University officials are concerned, was the President's behavior during the student strike of 1970, and most of them are reluctant to speak of the matter at all. Errors were made, blunders were made on the part of the ad- ministration, claims one official, but he seems to have forgotten what those blunders were. Mr. B.F.D. Runk, who was for ten years Dean of the University under Mr. Shannon, feels that it was undignified for the University's President to become involved in the strike. 'After Mr. Shannon decried the Indochina War along with the students, says Mr. Runk, the general public, the alumni, and the legislature were just fed up with the University administration. Obviously, the Shannons saw the strike dif- ferently. tlllll never forget the sense of sup- port we felt from the faculty and students, says Mrs. Shannon. They were as deter- mined as Edgar was that the University would never close, even for a minute. I think I learned more about the students in those five days than I had in the preceding ten years. There were many unfortunate aspects, and in many ways I would never want it to be repeated, but I would never want Cambodia to be repeated either. The children loved the excitement, though. Oh, the strike - that was so funny! says Lois, who was only eight when it all hap- pened. I was so mad when they all marched up here and Mom didnt even wake us up. As the president of an important university, Edgar Shannon has been placed in the middle of more than one serious controversy, but according to Mr. Bice, he has always remained unflappable. Mr. Runk, and pos- sibly some students, see this quality as a lack of decisiveness, but coolness and rationality are certainly rewarded when tense emotions need calming. One can never tell that Mr. Shannon is angry until he labels something preposterous, signifying his highest level of outrage. There is no doubt for anyone that the Pres- identls job is a sacrificial one, and he rarely gets a chance to abandon his duties for more than a few hours. The students have all the fun, and the President writes the letters to get them off the hook, says Mr. Berkeley, but Mr. Shannon does occasionally sneak off to ski, play tennis, or visit the seashore with his fam- ily. The Shannons also support the University athletic program with zeal. The President has a box, you know, says Mr. Bice, and he sits in his box and entertains important visi- tors. But he also makes a special effort to meet the athletes, visiting them in the locker room and giving pep talks at a few practices each year. We all appreciate it, but held make a lousy football coach, says one player. Hels just not fanatical enough. Even so, Edgar Shannon is an accomplished athlete. Ac- cording to his wife, he has killed more than five bats in their Carr's Hill home with a squash racquet. But it is true that Mr. Shannon is more a poet than an athlete, and his family seems to appreciate that. He has a little rhyme for ev- erything we do, says Lois. ttlf we're eating too much at supper, he has a poem about that, even. He remembers almost everything he reads. There is little time for the President to reflect on what he reads or does, though, and Mrs. Shannon sees this as one of the most unfortunate aspects of the position. You meet so many interesting people and you buy their books, but your desk just piles up and you never get them read, she says. The family has a deep and abiding friendship with Sir Charles Tennyson, the ninety-four year old grandson of Lord Ten- nyson, but they are able to visit him only infrequently. However, Mr. Shannon will prob- ably take off for at least a semester next year, and the family may get a chance to return to England and visit their distinguished friend. They may also get a chance to catch their breath a little and relax in their new home on Blue Ridge Road. I think Edgar always thought fifteen years would be a good time to retire, says Mrs. Shannon. But you have to pick a time when you think things are going particularly well, and we hope they are now. I think things are in very good shape. Most likely, what Mr. Shannon is, as much as what he has done, has put the University in good shape. Whatever the opposite of pompous is, he is it, says Mr. Bice. Perhaps the word is magnanimous. Because the Present sometimes can depress, And Futures often hold less hope than fear; What is and what will be perhaps appear Quite commonly as causes of distress. When rash imagination is subdued, No more devising wild, impotent dreams; Then Fantasy no longer serves, it seems, As sanctuary found in solitude. Those moments when l cease to hear and feel The throbbing, beating pulse of Time behind Me, pushing, forcing me ahead; I find That sometimes only Memories are real.
