Edgar F. Shannon President Of The University l ,afar . wi-T Change, accelerated by concurrent ex- plosions of population and knowledge, is one of the vital characteristics of modern America. A university that failed to re- spond to the needs of a dynamic society could not long retain its claim to that name or to public support. Nlr. Jefferson himself looked always to the future and advocated the right of each generation to fulfill itself within the context of its own times. All divisions of Mr. Jefferson's University are growing in scope of in- struction, learning, and research, in facil- ities, in enrollments, and in capacity to contribute to the advancement of man- kind. They are doing so as a part of fundamentalgoals and ideals, which re- main unchanged. The students them- selves transmit from one year to the next the traditions of honor, of excellence, of service, and of courtesy. Ever mindful of the University's purpose to enrich the hu- man mind through free enquiry, as well as to preserve existing truth and time- tested values, the faculty and the Board of Visitors recently reasserted the objec- tive of the University of Virginia, to make a living reality in the conscious- ness and the daily lives of the students and faculty the special historic commit- ment of this University to the character of its members, symbolized in the invita- tion carved upon its portals to 'Enter by this gateway and seek the way of honor, the light of truth, the will to work for men.' .16
