The University could be just as fine an academic in- stitution if no student ever wore a coat and tie again. We hope that never happens, of course. The University once turned out gentlemen who may or may not have been scholars, let us hope we never see it produce scholars who are not gentlemen. We hope instead that the ideals of the old University-honor, gentlemanly behavior, the quest for a civilized existence, well round- ed competence in a number of fields-can be happily married to the intellectual advancement of the new. Will this happen? Can the Honor System, to cite one tradition worth saving, survive the influx of thousands of more students? We think so. But rather than curse the inevitable loss of some of the old University-as pleasant and gen- teel as it may have been-we prefer to take pride in the accomplishments of the new. Our avowed pursuit of ex- cellence is showing handsome results, and one day soon we may fulfill the dream of lVlr. Jefferson when he wrote: I contemplate the University of Virginia as the future bulwark of the human mind in this hemisphere. Mr. Jefferson-how could anyone write this much about the University, new or old, without mentioning him? It is often asked, if he should ride down from lVlon- ticello one morning as he was once apt to do, would he be pleased with what his University had become?
