The next big expansion in housing facilities came in 1859 when six, eight-room, two story dwellings were constructed in the area between Monroe Hill and what is now New Cabell Hall. This complex was called Dawsonis Row and for many years was the most sought after liv- ing area on the Grounds. Toward the close of the century social fraternities were beginning to develop, and the University was among the first colleges to provide separate dwellings for these groups. Since then, fraternities have in- creased their number to over thirty national organizations, each with its own house. Pi Kappa Alpha, 1909 Old Copeley Hill New Copeley Hill

Alderman Road Dormitories Subsequent to World War I, the University community witnessed the arrival of the Monroe Hill dormitory complex, used today for gradu- ate students, the ten McCormick Road Houses, designed to accomodate the hrst-year Class, and hnally the very modern Alderman and Observa- tory complexes used by upperclassmen. Another credit to the housing department can be seen on New Copeley Hill Where spacious apartments for married students have replaced the former ttbarracksh of Old Copeley Hill. Thus, With the passing of time the University has remodeled and expanded its housing facili- ties comensurate with an expanded student body while constantly striving to provide a maximum of comfort and utility within the ar- chitectural theme of Mr. Jefferson.
