DEDICATION jib 59th volume of CORKS AND CURLS is dedicated on the occasion of his retirement, announced on his sixty-fifth birthday, 18 De- cember 1946. Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering 1905-1909, Professor of Civil Engineering 1910-1933, he was an outstandingly inspiring teacher. Teach- ing, which was his first love and which has remained his chief love, he - deserted only because rare administrative ability destined him to be called to responsibilities which his sense of duty required hiin to put above personal preference. As Dean of the Department of Engineering, he built on sane and sound foundations; as Assistant to the President, he was a pillar of strength to the First President of the University of Virginia; and as Acting President and as President, he guided the destinies of Mr. Jeffersonis Uni- versity through no less arduous periods than the Great Depression and the Second World War, tirelessly working on behalf of the University and dedicating completely to it his strength and his great ability.
