Ted was drafted in September, 1941. In my letters to him, I told him of the many changes in University life. He laughed, at first. Then, last night, when we were having a short before-study bull session at the house, Ted erupted through the front door, dressed in olive drab. He shouted for the janitor to bring him a whiskey straight, and at the same time pounded us all on our backs. After we had mauled each other with our greetings and Ted had drunk the only corner of whiskey in the house, Ted proposed a trip to Leo's, Spencer's, or Fry Springs. I will never forget the expression on his face when he was greeted with answers such as Can't make it tonight, Ted, quiz, y'know, or Sorry, never make classes to- morrow. After he had suggested every- IBOI - - - THE thing from Lynchburg to the Cavalier, Ted gave up. Finally someone murmured some- thing about a movie, but was hushed up. Ted sulkily went to examine the blackout curtains in the soiree room. He found me later studying Navigation, and broke his way into conversation saying, I guess you were right, Bob, things sure have changed around here. Everybody serious, no one right, no parties on the lawn. Yeah,', I replied. Ted crossed the hall and rumaged about among the book shelves, cursing softly. In a few moments he was back, with an old Corzxs AND CURLS. This is the way XT X r Q 'rvf' ..- i W I ml

UNIVERSITY AND THE WI-IH it used to be, he said, as I looked for my own picture. The pages showed the story of two years ago. There were on those pages a straight glass of parties with a jigger of girls, the Patch, New York, and the club at Richmond. But that was when one seldom went to classes or worried about passing. It was a grand life, full of fun and gaiety. Ted took me back to 1941, saying, Remember those parties before exams, and how you dicln't buy your text books until the last week of the term, the all-night fraternity parties and the broken furniture, how things would spread down to the Cavalier and maybe Lynch- burg? And remember how we used to get the idea around lunch time of going down 7 Q W 4- F gf E311 to Richmond, and in forty-five minutes we'd be there? 'iWe still have some of that, Ted, I said weakly, knowing as Ted did that there was little of it left, and that only on rare occasions. Ted continued. I can't understand it. This place reminds me of Monday after Easter week in '40. Perhaps it's the gas, or the rubber, or something. Maybe the new fraternity rules, or-oh, just all the re- strictions on civilian life these days. I gargled a reply, but Ted waved me aside. I guess the students know that if they donit study, it'll mean their degrees and reserve statuses . . . all that stuff. 'S ruin- ing the University. He flopped into a chair, pressing tomorrow's Mercator Chart into nice little contours that looked like the uplands of Lower Tibet. I didn't say anything for a while. Then I told him he was dead wrong. Just hit a bad night. I told him of a wild party that started at the Cave and ended up on East Lawn. But Ted and I knew that that party had been two years ago, just before Ted had gone into the army. Ted and I knew.
