t is peculiarly fitting that this wartime volume should be dedicated to Thomas Jefferson and the principles to which, in a time as grave as our own, he boldly pledged his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor. These fundamental principles of free men in a free society he expressed in ringing phrases which stirred, and will always stir, the American soul to its very depths. He not only gave these self-evident truths immortal literary form, but throughout his long career he fought to give them reality. He devoted his life and his genius to developing and applying the philosophy of human rights which became the creed of Americanism, translating democratic faith into democratic practice, waging war on many fronts to achieve political, economic, religious, and intellect- ual freedom. His principles are timeless in their truth and application: enduring in their influence. I-lnd in today's embattled world, fighting that tyranny against which Thomas Jefferson swore eternal hostility, Amer- icans and all liberty-loving peoples are animated by the militant democracy of this ever-living and ever-in- spiring champion of man's inalienable rights. -Bernard Mayo.
