8 Even in his later years the personal appearance of William Holding Echols was very imposing. In youth it was magnificent; his red hair topping off his tall, sinewy form like a hauling beacon. I f the Norsemen of the Viking A ge looked like Reddyv Echols, and had voices as mighty as his, it is no wonder that their battle-cry struck terror to the hearts of their foes and that medieval litanies contained the words: A furore N ortmannorum libero nos, Domine! If ever there lived men devoid of physical fear, Echols was one of them. But his morale was equal to his physical courage, and the power of his personality over others measured up to his courage. I saw him quell, as by magic, an excited crowd of our fellow-students about to march against some circus-men, one of whom had had a fight with a student. A fter listening to bellicose oratory, Echols spoke. His eyes flashed fire, but his head was level and cool. Fellows? said he, in solemn, sonorous tones, if you decide to go down and tackle that circus crowd, I am going with you, and P m going to stay with you to the end. But, before we go, lefs understand clearly what we are doing. We are not going to a picnic. Those men have pistols; and, if we attack them, some of us will never come back. Now, if you insist upon going, come onlll They did not go. Years afterwards he spoke, just before we declared war upon Ger- many, to a great throng in Cabell Hall. His words were few, but like blows from Thoris hammer. Scorning to deceive those youths with enticing pictures of glamorous war, he told them the stark truth. In modern warf, said he, in thunder tones, brass buttons and shoulder-straps have been relegated to the rear. Modern war is a thing of MUD and BLOOD? But, did those boys tremble at the thought of the mud and blood, of the lice and the rats? Far from it! Under the spell of a great and dauntless soul their courage rose to its greatest heights; and they were ready-yes, eager--to face even the unspeakable horrors of modern war, ready to do their duty, at all costs. -RICHARD HEATH DABNEY.
