The first Black Heritage Week, the first Emphasis Week, a guest appearance by the Dal- las Symphony - all a part of TU accelerating toward beingthetotal university. Students came out in some of the largest numbers for more TU events then in past years polishing off 2,000 Blood, Sweat 84 Tears tick- ets: packing the Great Hall for a speakers series that was termed by one bureau as the kind of grogram that many universities across the na- tion are lookingtowardf' We had student government working toward the student and university becoming a rele- vant part of the communnity. The money from Student Association activity fees left the budget fast, but students attended and most assuredly gained something academically, culturally and socially. We gained and lost a newspaper editor in one week, we saw our president lower the flag in memory of slain Kent State students, and we saw minimester become more student oriented in its second year. We watched Hoot increase morale and school spirit for TU in one of our better football seasons in several yearsg the roundballers and baseballers performed like well-oiled machinery while all the sports worked under the strain of NCAA football rulings. Homecoming came and went. No house deco- rations or student-alum dance but a carnival and fireworks. The cheerleaders cheered and a few stalwart TU fans stood to cheer the team, sur- prising those around them andthe cheerleaders. We didn't inaguarte a president this year. Build, Build, Build - a new nursing school squeezed its way between Business Hall and John Mabee Dormitory while the field house and per- forming arts center were anticipated. We closed off seventh street for a mall and wondered where the new law school would light after the anony- mous million dollar donation. And the beat went on under the new but at times leaky Westby Center roof. Jess was always there to lead us to lost and found. account for the missing cue balls in the poolroom, and keep the music room opened while constantly sched- uling and reschedulingforWCGH. Voltaire said he who has not the spirit of his age, has all the misery of it. Our year has been a spirited one, whith good activities and programs. There are always those who say it could have been better and they are right. But those gradu- ating seniors who have been here at least four years or more can say we've seen less spirited years in the past and see the freshmen learning that the U is one way and anticipate for them an even more hectic future at TU. 24 46 NOW OPEN TO COLLEGE STUDENTS UNDER 21 DISCOUNT TICKETS TO ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS 502 OFF ON SAFE DEPOSIT BOX FREE CHECKING ACCOUNT AUTOMATIC SAVINGS PREFERENTIAL LOAN TREATMENT FREE FINANCIAL CONSULTATION MONTH ,L NATIONAL BANK OF TULSA BT THE PACESETTERP BANK THAT HELPS YOU GET THINGS DONE Something Better By Gail Malone In the spring of the year, when Oklahoma's ascerbic winter air turns sweet and bodes change, students at the University of Tulsa catch the scent and are drawn out for an annual pre-aestival celebration called Spring Week. The student senate sponsored event ties music, woodsies, dances, picnics and competition into five artificially careless days. Students may use the week as a temporary paliative to ease the pain of knowing that exams are imminent, or to obscure the memory of the ones they just flunked. Graduating seniors see Spring Week as their last chance to raise a little hell with college friends before they are booted out by commencement. Spring Week is meant to be a tradition, but at least one of its attractions has become an incontinent ritual. It starts as a good natured co-educational tug-o-war session, with the most troglodytic of TU's athletes pitted against everyone else. The object of the game, we all know, is for one side to pull the opposing team into a large, swampy, medially located mud hole. This preliminary rite is a pleasant diver- sion, but the real fun begins after the match. The athletes and assorted other males remain to collar every girl light enough to carry, drag or roll to the edge of the gluey morass where she is given only a second to realize that, like or not, she is goingfora dip. ln this unrestrained foray everyone gets slathered with mud. No matter how care-free, how mindless one's Spring Week has been, everyone realizes that he is goingto end up in the mud. Perhaps, though few would admit it, those unthinking mud-slinging jocks have an allegorical insight that we anti-athletic intellectual snobs should recognize. It could be that they are performing, in a sort of cinema verite, a foreshortened ver- sion ofthe university education of the average American student. No matter how carefree, how mindless of the exigencies of life one's college days have been, ev- eryone must realize that he is going to end up in the mud of the real world. If this conclusion seems a bit moribund it is simply because this detached, disinterested university must pass away as well. Woodrow Wilson's perfect place of learning . .. a place removed ... recluse, ascetic, like a nun, not knowing that the world passes, not caring, is no longer viable in a schizoid world of moral disjunction and onto- logical polarization. Certainly students are still concerned with the same elemental problems that have always maintained. We worry about clothes, love, money, grades and all the ephemeral, if recurring, considerations one would anticipate. But the discomfort they cause is transient, and certainly not terminal. There are more overweening concerns facing the student today. He is troubled by the war, racial disunity and poverty. He is at loggerheads with another genera- tion and in stark disagreement with members of his own. The very words of con- temporary society reflect the sense of his dilemma. People belong to factions or splinter groups: they are regionalists or nationalist. And to all of them, compro- mise is anathema. The student's educational experience has been treated as a period of dormacy. He is only gestating, preparing for some amorphous concept called life He will not reach fruition until he is born at graduation. The student then faces a diverse society and is unable to apprehend its complex machinations. Acquiring a college education has too often been simply an agglutinative pro- cess by which a student is given a cursory introduction to the elements of a discip- line to enable him to claim a working knowledge of the whole. He is imbued with the inconsequential liquid of the big picture with an overview that will be most beneficial in the long run. lt's like telling a repairman to fix a broken television by fooling around with the walnut console. Educators fail to tell their students that they will be ill-equipped to handle the accretions of society if they have no knowl- edge of the systems components. The educational paste-up must eventually disap- pear because it holds no meaning for the modern student. It appears that contemporary students have concluded that they must become more aware of the radical Cmeaning rootj verities of the world they will inexorably face. They have come to realize that single bricks have built the dividing walls of their society, and the walls must be taken down a brick at a time. For this kind of melioration, a person has to be familiar with the units, or bricks, he seeks to ar- range more equitably. fcontinued, next pagel Something Better, Continued. Perhaps too often for many, our attempts to familiarize ourselves with these basic elements have taken an importunate turn and the bricks have become home- ly missiles designed to alleviate a feeling of impotence and frustration. Though it may be slight consolation, be assured that our cries for something better would not be so vociferous if we did not believe that something better were possible. c ss II ,f i i f' XNJ Nothing can compare to the pure comfort and carefree convenience of total electric Gold Medallion living. ln a Gold Medallion Home electricity is the single source of power.
