PONTIUS FUHEWUHII We offer this book as a part of our contribution to the forward movement of our University. It has been our aim to make this a book of memories-memories that are both pleasant and worth while. We have endeavored herein to catch a spark of the Greater Tulsa Spirit, so that those who read it may feel again the thrill of undergraduate days and join with us in an expression of our love for Tulsa and of our determination to do her honor and prove worthy of her name. In behalf of the class of 1936, we present this volume of the Kendallabrum to the faculty, students, alumni and friends of the University of Tulsa. Central was quick to take advantage of a bad break for Tulsa, when Howard Clark fumbled a punt soon after the opening kick-off, and the Broncs recovered on the Tulsa eight-yard marker. On fourth down, fullback Jim Haught kicked a perfect held goal for the visitors. Score: Central 3, Tulsa 0. Few of the 8.000 fans in the stands at this time sensed the final outcome of the game. The Hurricane players appeared to be trying too hard, and over- anxiousness cost them several off-side penalties, and halted their few offensive threats. Central marked up the final score early in the second period after a Tulsa penalty gave the invaders the ball on the Tulsa 48. From there diminutive Lanier Dark sped to the 25-yard marker Without a hand being laid upon him. There three Hurricane taeklers hit him but he whirled beautifully, and went on to score standing up. Score: Central 9, Tulsa 0. Callantly struggling to salvage the game, the determined Golden Hurricane players swept onto the field for the second half, but to no avail. The unexpected strength of the Central line completely blocked the Hurri- canels offensive attack during the entire game. TVhat was regarded as a warm- up game turned out to be exactly the opposite, and the Orange and Black went down to defeat, in its Worst upset since the arrival of Coach Henderson here, eleven years ago. - 4HIlIHllHHHuri ,fs a R Q 11 we '53, Ham Harmon Captain-elect Cen ter 'FUR X B' , NN , it xi! if st 'W as 4-it f X A - ,f,, :,. Both teams had excellent scoring chances early in the game but the alert linesmen broke up every threat. After Ham Harmon kicked off for Tulsa, the Nfustangs passed to the Tulsa 9-yard stripe, but their attack bogged down when Harmon recovered Bobby VVilson's fumble on the goal line. Kahl then punted out to the Nfustang 40, and the rush was halted for the remainder of the half. The resourceful Nfethodists were not to be denied, however. Early in the third period the passing combination of Bob Finley and little Bobby VVilson, who was later chosen on every All-American selection in the country, clicked for a gain of 51 yards. From the Tulsa nine, Finley split the line for the first score, and husky Nfaurice Orr converted for the extra point. Score: S.lXf.U. 7, Tulsa 0. Frequent substitutions were made and many passes were attempted during the remainder of the game. S.lVI.U. threatened again in the fourth period, when Burt made two long runs, but the Mustang drive was stopped on the Tulsa one- yard stripe. Chigger Enochs punted out to the Tulsa 34, and the surprised Hurricane players watched VVilson take the ball on a dead run and score standing up. Orr again converted. Score: S.M.U. 14, Tulsa 0. The crowd of 10,000 from which audible sighs had been heard early in the first quarter, was delighted with the excellent showing of the Hurricane against the team which later was selected to represent the East in the Rose Bowl contest, in recognition of an undefeated season of 12 games. 'if QHIHHHHHHUIP TEXAS CHRISTIAN A furious late drive, which was not terminated until the T.C.U. Frogs had pushed over its winning touchdown, enabled the Texans to hand the Golden Hurricane its third consecutive defeat of the season, 13 to O. Until this powerful rally, the game had been played on an even basis, with neither team seriously threatening to score. The winning touchdown came as a result of a 76-yard sustained march down the field. The score came only after the Tulsa line had stubbornly held the invaders within the five-yard line for three downs. The line finally had to yield to lf-augh's thrust at his right tackle. Score: T.C.U. 6, Tulsa O. An intercepted pass, intended for Kahl from Dennis, enabled Roberts to score unmolested, on a sprint of about 20 yards. Three Tulsa players were wait' ing for the ball, and Roberts dashed between them to take it. Score: 'l'.C.U. 13, Tulsa O. Tulsa's defensive play was satisfactory until the touchdown march of the visitors in the final stanza, but, as in the first two contests the Hurricane showed no scoring punch. A third-quarter drive took the Tulsans to the Frog 21, but they failed to threaten afterwards. Darrell Lester, T.C.T'fs All-American captain, was injured in the second quarter, but his absence didn't seem to affect the play of the Frogs. Five other players were taken from the game with injuries. all 1 W..-sv O f4EIll1HllHHHuw WASI-IBURN Vkashburn College was the first victim of the Colden Hurricane football machine, going down to defeat after receiving the brunt of the first Hurricane offensive power shown in four games played, 19 to 6. Behind a charging line, joey Kahl, Captain 'l'ack Dennis, Howard Clark, and llerman Blackwell led the attack as the Hurricane bewildered the lchabods in the first half with an assortment of effective running and passing plays. Kahl counted the first score of the game midway in the first period, inter- cepting a pass on the Tulsa 40 and scampering across the VVashburn goal line standing up. Clark and Dennis teamed for the other Hurricane scores, driving the ball 53 and S4 yards down the field on two successful sustained attempts. Captain Dennis counted six points for the Hurricane early in the second quarter, and Clark skirted his right end for the final Tulsa score a few moments later, after accounting for 43 yards of the 54-yard drive. VVashburn finally recovered its poise, coming out strongly in the third period. Pete Lalfollette was tackled heavily on the Tulsa 17, and fumbled the ball, a Wvashburn player falling on it on the Tulsa 11. ln five hard-hitting line plays, the lchabods counted their only tallies of the day. In this game the Golden Hurricane showed plenty of power, both on the offensive and the defensive, and seemed vastly improved since the first three contests of the season. Little Joey Kahl, a senior performing against the Aggies for the last time in his football career, scored early in the game. The flnal score came on a well- executed play, one of the most thrilling of the season. A double-lateral pass, from Captain Dennis to Herman Blackwell to Beverly Carmack, took the Aggies by surprise and allowed Carmack to run 40 yards through the entire team for a touchdown. As for the Aggies, they would have been 15 yards better off if they had never made the Tulsa trip. For that was the net loss of the 'visitors in yards gained from scrimmage. A The entire Tulsa team performed so well during the game that individual stars would be hard to select. Ham Harmon, .lack Kennon, Russell XIcLane. and Jerry Collins certainly were playing well enough for anybody's football team. Beneliel, formerly a star gridder for the University of Tulsa, has compiled a fine record as freshman coach here, having won 13 games and lost only one, that to Arkansas by a 13-6 score in 1934. This was the largest score that a Golden Gale opponent has been able to earn on Chetis teams, since he came here to coach in 1932. In the 14 games played since 1932, the Gales have counted a total of 293 points, while opponents have scored but 31. When they were beaten by Arkansas, Chet said the boys Were loafing. The Hurricane advanced from eighth place in 1935 to fifth this year and until late in the year the small Tulsa squad was in the running for the title that ended in a three way tie between Drake, Creighton, and Oklahoma Aggies. Tulsa won five and lost seven in league play and during the season captured nine games and lost 11. This was a big improvement over 1935 when the team took only three conference victories and five for the entire season. Drake, VVashington, Grinnell and VVashburn were Tulsa victims in league play. The Oklahoma Aggies and Creighton took two games from Tulsa while VVashing- ton was the only team the Hurricane beat twice, Grinnell and VVashburn splitting games. With only Wioody Estel, this year's captain graduating, Benefiel should have a strong team next year. Carl Bowen was elected to lead the team next year and as he captained junior and high school teams to championships his mates hope his record continues. Ned Butler, Robert Jones and Gerald 1N'1cClune were the sophomores that added the punch that made the Hurricane potent. Butler led Hurricane scorers with 150 points, 107 of them in conference play. He was second in the conference individual scoring race and his 20 points against Drake was the highest total in any conference game. The regular lineup most of the season was Gerald McClune and Ned Butler, forwards, Robert Jones, center, Captain Woody Estel and Carl Bowen, guards.
