Presently, the tallest building in Houston is I. M. Pei’s Texas Commerce Tower, at 76 stories. At its base teeters a precariously balanced sculpture by Miro (left, above). The first words spoken from the moon where, “Houston, Tranquility base here, the Eagle has landed.” In honor of Houston's unique status is “space city,” tranquility park is a futuristic memorial to Apollo. Reminiscent of rocket boosters on launch pads, metallic cyllindrical fountains await some countdown.

Of note is the addition to the Museum of Fine | 2 ‘the structural elements should stand out for themselves, not ‘to be hidden by decorative covering (note exposed gurders). | This school gives rise to “International style,” better known as “glass and steel boxes” that characterize Houston. Phillip Johnson (a student of Mies) shows this in the Penzoil Building (1977, right and lower right). Directly adjacent is Johnson’s regression to Gothic revival, the Republic Bank | Tower.

Into the Hermann Professional Building there flows a constant stream of people, some of them frozen in Leave-it- to-Beaver clothing (right and middle). A realistic depiction of the angst and burdens of medical school life is the sculpture by Bob Fowler. The nuclear family can be seen splashing about before the Prudential Building in a work by Wheeler Williams (1953).
