The Jones Pavilion was constructed at the same time as the medical school, appearing as one long continuous structure, an ivory tower lying on its side. Here, (middle left) is a scene that many will remember (note newly-completed cyclotron). On the other hand, (middle right), when it comes to Favrot Hall, most of us want to forget (note the aspiring perspiring marathoner Charles Harper). Fossil-filled limestone forms the walls of the Houston city hall, a WPA construction project replete with right-minded proletarian bas-relief insets and tiny neon clocks. Humble and squat, it looks curious against the towering downtown skyline.

The Prudential building (alias Houston Main building) was originally a luxury hotel. Designed by Kenneth Franzheim in 1952, it is the clean, polished art-deco of the time. The palm-shaded pool now serves as a refuge for students of the state. Perhaps more utilitarian is the oddly symmetrical Hermann Professional Building (which too was designed by Mr. Franzheim, in 1957) (right). A portion of M. D. Ander- son Hospital rises like the fortified spires of a castle (below), pink granite towers of medicine. Outside of the Robertson pavilion is the micro-scale tribute to the gothic cathedral, heavy buttresses supporting a stained-glass skin.

Of note is the addition to the Museum of Fine | 2 ‘the structural elements should stand out for themselves, not ‘to be hidden by decorative covering (note exposed gurders). | This school gives rise to “International style,” better known as “glass and steel boxes” that characterize Houston. Phillip Johnson (a student of Mies) shows this in the Penzoil Building (1977, right and lower right). Directly adjacent is Johnson’s regression to Gothic revival, the Republic Bank | Tower.
