Homecoming Although UT was without a Homecom- ing Queen this year', they were blessed with approximately 700 orange-clad alumni who stalked Neyland Stadium in hopes that they would witness a Tennes- see victory over South Carolina. The Queen election was replaced by the elec- tion of 3 Homecoming Object, the worst problem on campus. First place went to Commuter Parking. Student activities during the weekend included a student art sale at the Uni- versity Center, a photographic exhibit also at the Center, the Homecoming Parade which traveled down Gay Street and Cumberland Avenue to Volunteer Boulevard, and ended in Circle Park, a performance by the UT Men's Glee Club, and a free music festival, sponsored by the lnter-Residence Hall Association. Sigma Kappa's took first place in float competition. The newest Homecoming event this year was the bicycle race which started with a bang. from official starter Chan- cellor Archie Dykes. The race ran into difficulties, however as one of the riders was struck from behind by a car. Homecoming weekend was not com- plete until Tennessee's football team exploded in the second half to beat the Gamecocks by a score of 35-6. According to Coach Bill Battle, it was the best team effort, so far, in the season. The Vols were led to their Homecoming victory by none other than Bobby Majors who set up two touchdowns with third quarter interceptions. Homecoming week was blessed by two successful concerts. At the Civic Coliseum, 5,549 people blasted off to the sounds of the Fifth Dimension, and Stokely Athletic Center hosted the far out sounds of the James Gang. The Fifth Dimension played one week before Homecoming and the James Gang. Homecoming 1971 proved to be a totally unique experience for all those who took part. 18 MW 6225 ,' WWW; l
