A maxim for leadership goes something like this: ttBe loved. If you cannot be loved, be respected. If you cannot be respected, be feared. A sophomore at UT is still a follower who would appreciate just being noticed. Its so easy to become a part of the whole at UT. Antidotes to loneliness range from getting lost in the crowd of characters in a novel to being one of the crowd of characters at a football game. You can go to the library on the pretense of studying Games People Play, while hoping to pick up a date there and main- tain your pride either way. Group empathy is electri- fying at games when the stands resound with ttGive tem hell, Volsh and even in quieter moments when twenty hands pass a hot dog down the row. You can still find humor in campus cliches as a sophomore. Big calves on co-eds who trudge around campus are a cliche. Campus cops who are always late on the scene of a crime because they cannot find the bullet for their gun are a cliche. So are Knoxville drivers who got their licenses at a discount store. So is the Dean of Student Affairs, who you contact to ar- range your illicit student affair while at UT. So are people who sit in the magazine section of the under- graduate library hoping to pick up a date for Friday night. 18
