In the beginning, you may make it all the way to your classes on the hill without crack- ing a smile. By the time for your commencement march, you have considerably shortened the inter- vals of time between greetings of hi or between wry remarks about the always imminent rain. ago o o a

You probably felt as conspic- uous as a herd of one elephant when you first registered. Ignor- ing the radios hourly weather report, which repeated itself as though a trained parrot were the broadcaster announcing, llToday is cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of rain tomorrow, did not help. You forgot to bring your umbrella to Knoxville. That sin of omission is like forgetting to sign the Check for your fees. No matter. You give yourself that last going over in the mirror across the hall as you step out of the dorm elevator. On the way over it occurs to you that your impeccable wool suit may be a bit out of season. The hordes of all the others like you going through seem to all be there before you, adding to your state of near-panic. At last youlre climbing up the steps toward your first rush partyMthe excitement and expectation finally squash out the nervousness like the cigarette you hastily crushed out at the front door. Then the onslaught of clapping hands, boisterous songs, faces and smiles you cannot seem to match with names all play havoc with your senses. Later, with dread and excitement playing tag, you wait for the phone to ring bringing the glory of a bid or the gloom of thelre sorry, but we do hope youtll consider the informal rounds later in the year. And as you sport your new pledge pin, you find youlre also wearing a new air of self-assurance and do not feel at all like the kid the other day with the $10 and no dinner companion. IO
