EDUCATIO DEAN EDWARD CLIFTON MERRILL It has been the aim of the College of Education to provide undergraduate and graduate professional preparation for teach- ers, administrators, and other school personnelg to assist school systems and other agencies of Tennessee in programs of educa- tional improvementg and to promote and guide educational re- search. Numerous cooperative arrangements exist with state and local agencies and institutions who can provide materials and experiences of value in a program of teacher education. The College holds membership in the American Association of Col- leges for Teacher Educationg and its certification and degree programs are fully accredited by the National Council for Ac- creditation of Teacher Education, the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and the Tennessee State De- partment of Education. The excellent quality of training received is reflected by busi- ness administration graduates who have assumed positions of responsibility and leadership in all types of business and civic life. This in itself explains why the University of Tennessee's College of Business Administration is a leader in the South, both in the programs provided for training in virtually all types of skilled work in the business world, and opportunity provided for outside training in these various fields. 33

Graduates from the College of Engineering serve Tennessee, the South, the nation, and other countries. They participate in industrial production, transportation, communications, and many governmental services, they do design, construction, and operational and research Work. The cultural and disciplinary values of an engineering educa- tion give the graduate an excellent preparation for life, whether he finds his career in engineering or in some other field. The need for well-qualified engineering graduates is great, and they are in strong demand. Present indications are that this will al- ways be the case, in View of the increasing importance of en- gineering in the national economy. The opportunities for a ca- pable graduate in any field of engineering appear to be almost unlimited. 35
