The buildings were conver+ed ink: hospi+als. There were small forfs doHing Hue campus. The Merrill Ad of I862 gave +he Universify an oppor- funi+y +0 eshblish +he Agriculfure and Engineering De- parfmenfs. Ten years Ia+er +he school was reorganized fhe U. T, S+udenfs' Dean of fhe Universify in his robes. The speakers' fable af +he luncheon. officially as fhe sfa+e insfifufion. and was renamed +he UniversHy of Tennessee. A Board of Trusfees, wi'rh sfafewide represen+a+ion. was assigned +0 H15 Universify. Gradua're sfudy deparfmenfs and a course for feachers appeared a+ +his fime. The incorporafion of fhe Universify on a sfaiewide basis was shaded by fhe addiHon of medical and demal branches in Nashville. Years lafer +hese were moved to Memphis, where +hey have grown info commanding posifions in 1119 field of medical fraining. A Summer Normal School was firsf opened in IBBO. developing rapidly info +he presenf summer quarfer, providing in- valuable educa'lional service for persons engaged in feaching and for regular sfudenfs who mighf wish +0 make up work, or speed up +he fime necessary for com- ple'ring +heir courses, or +0 Jrake exfra subiecfs.
