Six Thousand Five Hundred of our students and alumni have gone into the armed services of our country. A very large number of the others are in civilian services contribut- ing to the war effort. We are very certain that the moving spirit of all these men and women is an expression of the certainty, so often emphasized by your Alma Mater, that consecrated devotion to democracy as exemplified in what is called the American way is worth all effort at preservation. I can give you no better message than that, as you go out from these halls, you carry this spirit with you. You will find as life moves forward that free men and free women merit their freedom only if they exercise wholeheartedly their blessing in the interest of the good life of all. Para- phrasing Nathan Hale, may you realize that you have only one life and it should be given for your country throughout its complete span. Then you shall not have lived in vain and this institution shall not have labored in vain. Apply yourselves to the good life, courageously, devoted- ly, and selflessly, with full understanding that the intangible rewards coming from a consciousness of efforts well spent are the only wholesome, living satisfaction.
