state government is an organization with arms permeating the society, not only for the purpose of control, but also for amelioration of the conditions existing throughout the society. The ideal of a state university is to be the heart of this organ- ism; and her investigations, instruction, and services are the media infusing Vitality and strength. Of all the blessings from the University, strong young men and women with their ideals are poten- tially the most significant. My parting message to the Senior Class is, therefore, that remembering their venerable Alma Mater, they carry With them into the active, variegated society of their day this Whole- some leaven of her ideals. My benediction upon the underclassmen of this 1939 is that they may drink deep of the idealism of this University in preparation for the day When they may carry on, too, in their social responsibilities. This has been a good year. All years may be good for those whose deep-seated sense of respon- sibility provides them direction. I have never yet seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
