31.8 Annan! UNIVERSITY UE EDHATTANUUEA THE B N EEN HUNDRED EUHTY-NINE V AE A ll .Q-Q! W I f QQ- X X X U X X X .iHiiffifi. 2049 HAVING FAITH IN THE FUTURE AND FEELING THAT THERE WILL EXIST AND GRADUATE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHAT- TANOOGA A CLASS ONE HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW, WE THE CLASS OF 1949 RECORD OUR LIFE AND ACTIVITY TODAY AND PRESENT THIS RECORD TO THE FUTURE IN A TIME CAPSULE. WE GREET YOU . . . WE HOPE THAT WHEN YOU OPEN THIS CAPSULE THE WORD WAR WILL HAVE AN ARCHAIC MEAN- ING. WAR, AS WE KNOW IT, IS SOMETHING THAT NATIONS, OR RATHER THE GOVERNMENTS OF NATIONS, RESORT TO WHEN THEY CAN NO LONGER REACH AGREEMENTS. WE HAVE JUST EXPERIENCED ONE OF THE WORST CATASTROPHIES WHICH HAS BEFALLEN MANKIND, AND WE ARE AGAIN UNDER THE THREAT OF ANOTHER CONFLICT WHICH MAY INVOLVE THE WHOLE WORLD. U E HUNDRED YEARS ----- SOME OF OUR LEADING SCIENTISTS TELL US THAT TEN YEARS FROM NOW THE HUMAN RACE, CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT, MAY NOT EXIST. BECAUSE WE REFUSE TO BELIEVE THESE SCIENTISTS AND BECAUSE WE HAVE PLACED OUR FAITH IN THOSE WHO HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE IN THE ENDURING DESTINY OF MAN, WE HAVE PLANTED THIS TIME CAPSULE TO PROVE OUR FAITH IN HUMANITY AND THE HARDINESS OF OUR RACE. WE LIKE TO THINK OF YOU AS OUR DESCENDENTS IN TIME. ONE HUNDRED YEARS FROM TODAY YOU WILL OPEN THIS CAPSULE AND WILL HAVE BEFORE YOU THIS FAIR, IF NOT COMPLETE, RECORD OF OUR EVERYDAY LIFE . . . THE CLOTHES WE WEAR, THE GAMES AND ACTIVITIES IN WHICH WE PARTICI- PATE, SUBJECT MATTER OF OUR COLLEGE COURSES, SCIENCE IN ITS INFANCY, THE SHORT RECORD OF THE HUMANITIES, THE GREAT EXPERIMENT OF OUR AMERICAN DEMOCRACY . . IN SHORT YOU WILL HAVE SOME IDEAS OF OUR WAY OF LIFE. WE WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND US AND OUR WAY OF LIFE. LIKE ALL OTHER GRADUATING CLASSES, WE FEEL THAT WE MIGHT HAVE SOME OF THE ANSWERS TO THE PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD. WE FEEL, SINCE WE ARE ALL VETERANS, THAT WE ARE A MORE MATURE CLASS THAN ANY WHICH HAS EVER BEEN GRADUATED FROM THIS UNIVERSITY. VET- ERANS? YES, SOME OF US ARE ACTUALLY VETERANS OF THE ARMED FORCES WHO FOUGHT IN WORLD WAR II, AND THE REST OF US ARE VETERANS OF SACRIFICE, MISGIVINGS AND FEAR . . . ALL WANTING A BETTER WORLD FOR OURSELVES AND FOR POSTERITY. THEREFORE, WE SALUTE YOU THE CLASS OF 2049 AND DEDI- CATE THIS ISSUE OF OUR SCHOOL PUBLICATION, HOPING THAT IT WILL GIVE YOU A RECORD OF OUR LIVES AND EXPRESS TO YOU A PROMISE FOR YOUR FUTURE. fl ... fi: Y , ..----5--- ,,,, , YW . ,, ,Mffwv 'mm -mama' f. , nf- .-nw MQ - vviawm 2, wwf: wwf arg YA J gr f -'ErJ1e'7'v1.i 5--M u , B- -NN ml za :vmwr 1, 1 : jj , ww -1 , -mwfuw , New ax. ,mm 45' UMENTS.AND EEASIUNS UQLEETEUIN A - QMPLETE LHUM IGNIFYING UUH NTEHESTIN r QEMEBENDINGIJFE 6w X 'H fl Typ! yr fl xl I I! x , in ss 1 1 H M. 4 ss Q ? af W f H L WT W mu A lf1 N 4 ,W HJ H MJ H M XJ 1 T zxr1L'm JN? GRADUATE STUDE 4? HASKEW STANTON, B.M. Organ student of Miss M cl lwraitb 4? DR. ALEXANDER GUERRY O God our Father, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of those who depart this life in faith, we remember before thee in this hour thy servant, our former President, who labored among us, who guided us, and who inspired our thoughts and efforts in behalf of Christian education. We bless thee for his kindly human spirit, for his keen sense of justice, for his discerning sense of value, for the outreach of his vision, for his abiding faith in the reality of the spiritual, and for the courage and fearlessness which characterized his leadership in our college and in our community. VVe rejoice today that thou didst give him to us for a few years to lead our institution through a serious crisis to greater opportunities for service. Thanks be to thee for the hallowed influence of his personality on teachers, stu- dents, and people of the community, and for our abiding heritage in the fruits of his labors. Through thy providence thou didst call him to a Wider sphere of service, and we rejoice that through thy grace thou didst lead him to notable achievement in his last field of labor. Guide and uphold our sister institution, so suddenly and sorely bereft of his leadership, and that the tasks he undertook in her behalf may be carried on to full fruition, Father of mercies, comfort and sustain with thy presence those most dear to him, and especially her who has been the comrade of his heart and his labors through the years. -GOD FREY TIETZE 17 EADEE EU HAROLD CADEK Director First Row: D I.eROY ANSPACH, Piano. Since taking over the helm at U.C. in 1931, Scrappy has sent his charges via Notre Dame system to a record of 76 wins, 53 losses, and 11 ties, which, considering the caliber of the teams his small squads have tackled, is some record. Stumpy Sarratore had a perfect day on kicking the extra points, to top off a successful season. Coach O'Brien and his team came' through with flying colors, and provided the student body with many thrilling games. The team won every game played at home-in our own spacious gym- except when we played Georgia, a Southern Con- ference team--and then we only lost by a one- point margin. For the West Tennessee game our ace rebound man, George Carden, was out with a sprained ankle and it kept him away from theihardwoocl toils until the last game with Maryville College. The Mocs lost to Memphis State Teachers and Tennessee Tech, though, we sure ripped over them on our own floor. The boys did themselves proud on the Memorial Auditorium floor, they held the University of Tennessee to a 94-75 victory, pretty good score. Then, the Peerless Woolens, in a battle which some people built up as being for the title of the best Chattanooga team, just came out on top, 66-63. That was a last-minute victory margin. Closing the season with a bang, the basket- blenders dropped a return engagement with the Maryville College Five, in the upper East Tennes- see city. - Y E wf,-' in A- xi ,J H r, G I if AJR '33 -.J I 4 GEORGE CARDEN Cajflnin RAY GRIFFITH .'llff'l'Illl16' Capizlizz . The Blood-Bowl crowd this year saw Pi Kappa Alpha emerge on the long end of the 7-0 score as a result of a late second quarter drive and a pass-Shrader to Love.
