These are personal words, of course, but they also come to you in behalf o f the Board of Governors and the staff of your col- lege. Most of you have had four years of being on campus and a real part of New Haven College. Some of you have come from other colleges. It has been a pleasure to have all of you with us. It is our most sincere wish that you have found on our campus, in our buildings and among your fellow students and fa- culty all that you have sought for in achieving a college education. Ours is primarily a technical college where competence in business and en- gineering are acquired at the four year level. We view this objective, however, as only one phase of your college ca- reer. We hope you have broadened your perspective considerably beyond the technical and material and have sought and achieved asocial and cxiltxxral awareness to a high degree. There are many who believe that the only college education is one in liberal arts. In the opposite camp are those who feel that technical training in considerable depth is the only way to a profession. Since we emphasize the latter ob- jective, we naturally mould our curri- cula to that end. But the liberal education is not ignored because we believe in a combination. Fvirthermore, four years is only a small fraction of the years ahead. Opportunities for depth in professional training and breadth in a liberal education are ample. This is a charge to each of you that the mere formalization of four years spent in a college is not the end of your education. A majority of you will not use the Engineering-Science Building, now on the drawing boards, with construction scheduled for next year. Members of the class of 1971 will be the first to use this much needed facility. When it is avail- able, a modest increase i n enrollment will be possible. But the primary pur- pose of this new building will be to pro- vide better facilities for a technical education. The Student Center, which was completed this past year, has served well indeed as a focus for your extra- curricular activities. Next must b e the greatly improved technical facilities. Alumni support in the magnitude that colleges experience today is com- paratively new. Even the great univer- sities find that this type of financial aid has materially increased over the past ten years. Our own 1964-65 Annual Alumni Fund exceeded all previous ef- forts in every category, and we were proud of this achievement. The support of the alumni means much to every college. It is a barometer by which other donors outside the col- lege family judge the worthiness of a college for additional help. We hope that you, members of the Class of 1966, will be loyal alumni, but we cannot expect your loyalty unless your college merits it. You shall be the judge; we hope the decision will be favorable. I offer every best wish to each of you as you leave these halls. May you find success in your chosen field of en- deavor. May your experience here stand you in good stead. May you contribute in small or large part to the benefit of your community, your country and yoxir fellow man. , 1 -€Xk ZZ Z 77 , ■ ' . V;1 , ' %r ' ANDREW LOUIS ALBERINO Northford, Conn. B. S.
