I • PAGE 75 • Tower in Three Moods Gaunt grey against a goose-feather sky, Beaten by the long slanting rain, You stand a grim sentinel of time, Like an old fortress of forgotten fear and pain. You who existed yesterday and will tomorrow, You who have laughed at creeping time and sorrow. Soft grey against a faint blue April sky, Your grimness and your greyness gone. Pale green vines peeping from hidden windows, Faint sunlight glimmering, playing lightly on Your surface; today there is no stumbling rain — No suggestion of old sorrows and buried pain. Crimson grey against a fading Autumn sky, A mad whirl of red-gold leaves in the air. You are sad today for all your scarlet and gold, The scarlet tint lends to you an air of futile care, Yet you are alive against the crimson sky, Amidst the red-brown leaves whirling by. I never hear the stumbling fingers of the rain, Or see the pale blue of an April sky, Or see an orange-slashed evening sky, Or red-gold leaves madly whirling by, But what I see a grim tower standing grim and high, Outlined against a carmine evening sky. HERSELF THE KALEIDOSCOPE AS SEEN BY WILLA WINCHELL Twin Deloney, Jane, Ai- leen, again Twin Delo- ney. Hup — one, two, three ' n over the rail. Hats doffed! Miss Irvin! Dot, Lois and Maurine. Yeah, and the cars are beginning to stop in front of Ramsay. Sunday afternoon in front of Hanson. Tra-la- la, time on my hands. Virginia and Best Beau Kendrick. The chief chef and aides. Something special — Her- mit. Lilla, Alice, Virginia, Caroline, Julia Dent, Mil- dred and the Sellers twins. Is Anniston there? What price photography? Dot, Ledbetter, Mary, and Pat. Pat sees the birdie. Just among us girls. Hehl Hehl Looks like some heavy looting checked on the getaway. Try the stairs next time, Marjie. Is he a help and do we stand by him! Til say, Mr. Coopah, you old tease. Time off for a photo of the whole works, from Will on. Willa, Helen, and Dot. Pretty lassies all. Not Mary Ellen Worthy! Busy? On Sunday after- noon? Sirens wot? All save Pol- lyanna on extreme left and Victoria on extreme right. And then I sez . . . . The lone stag, and does Annie Hurt look proud? Julia and Tom. Aw Rosie, quit punchin Whoops, m ' dears. Willa Winchell on the job. West Main fire Escape. Boots and Jessie Mae — practice teaching. Haughty Seniors . . . Not even a front face for the poor photographer. Mrs. Harris . . . Hanson Mother. Please do not feed the monkeys. By strict orders of the animal trainers. Senior Domain. Yo-Yo and Ditto loung- ing de luxe. Qatnpus Infants Nursery School youngsters leaving the Infirmary after the daily throat-mopping. • Vera Grace Mobley under the illusion that she ' s on the Board Walk with her im- ported parasol (ahem!) and most coquettish expression. • The camera catches indis- creet Emma Enslyn Robison in the bath tub. Nor does she look exactly chagrinned! • Mama Koch catches Baby Frances in the orchard just before Sunday School, and in her best bib and tucker (and panties), too! • Isn ' t she a dear little thing, though? And she ' s kept that timid little expression all these years. And we wouldn ' t be a bit surprised if she didn ' t still hold on to flowers just like that. • Lois Wil- liams has been on a lark and gotten all the III ' curls tousled. This does prove that said curls are the real thing. • Giddy Dot Kitchens . . . Hey! Hey! What fun on one ' s tricycle! And, Dotty dear, watch the traffic cops. ° Wistful Genie May can ' t quite face the photographer. Wonder for whom the bow of ribbon could have been in them days? • Itty Bitty Dotty Bandy all mad at dolly. Where have we seen those toothies before? (Was the bow of ribbon there to add height?) As usual Ann Christian turns a cool shoulder to the boy-friend. Charming frock you have on, Ann. Rejected suitor is rather well-dressed, too. I The inseparable four — Holly, Jerry, Gin ' a, and Katherine. Marjorie and Evelyn — basking in the sunshine. Fan and Brother — looks like that kind you read stories about — true and lasting. Our favorite hound. The Editor of the Tower in an informal pose. Mock cavalry . . . What Ho! Giddyap, Weems! Chapel Day . . . Can you recognize the dutiful ones? Front of Main Prome- nade. Red Clay, Bernice, Jessie Mae, Ibbie, etc. You guessed it — down be- hind the swimming pool! The Library.
