There was a chest, the poet writes. Wherein the gods had hid from view A swarm of black and evil Sprites, And what must poor Pandora do, Who curious, unsatisfied, But turn the key and click the lock And fling the heavy lid hack wide; And startled at the hideous flock Of sins and errors, and disease To try the souls of mortal men. Then only Hope was left for these To turn them to their gods again And mind tliem of the golden days When all their steps went peaceful ways. This is our Golden Age, our lime Of splendid youth. Now dawns a day When We must leave this happy clime And face the world Pandora ' s way. With Hope to be our guiding Star, Let Memory be green, and yet — Be with our footsteps near and far And only death make us forget. fS8B fcS v i . Puzzled and not knowing what to do, King Iobates finally conceives a happy solution by proposing to the young hero that he should slay the Chimaera, then laying waste his kingdom. This monster was part lion, part goat and part dragon, breathing fire and smoke. Bellerophon accepts, but is advised by a soothsayer to procure, if possible, the winged horse, Pe- gasus, who dwelt on Mount Helican when not soaring in the sky. Seeking aid of Minerva, goddess of wisdom, Bellero- phon is given a golden bridle while asleep, and after a long search, finds Pegasus, and with the aid of the bridle, becomes his master. The Chimaera is then destroyed, not without danger, and other dangerous missions are solved, and like many other heroes, Bellerophon is rewarded with the royal princess as his bride, and is appointed successor to the throne. =J â– EELLEROPHON SLAYS THE CHIMAERA The Golden Bridle Bellerophon enlisting aid of the wise goddess Minerva Is given a golden bridle and with it power (un- heard of) To tame winged Pegasus upon whose bad? The hero Flew in triumph to destroy a fearful monster, The Chimaera. ' Tis a pretty tale containing a moral, Always true That they who would great trials meet, or sub- due, Musi acquire the golden bridle of Knowledge and Power, And by such aid, great deeds attain, even At this hour. Of course, we immediately declined the offer, because we might wear out some of their privileges (accidentally, to be sure), and we don ' t dare run such a risk. I hear that quite a few of the Seniors are indignant that we refused ; they would be, for they do hate to see us on a lower level than they. We thoroughly enjoy it, and the thought of the ascent to come is rather bitter. Would that we be allowed to continue our blissful state ! The Junior Prom will be staged at the laundry, which will be effectivvely dec- orated for the occasion. The aroma of soap will be featured and the refreshment committee promises buttons for dessert. The steam presses will be used to warm up the dates, if necessary. and then after the sleigh ride we were reclining on the veranda reveling in the fragrance of Wisteria when we received by air mail a most urgent plea for us to carry our play, Monsieur Beaucaire, to the Little Theater of Newala. This was impossible, for we had already signed a contract with the Strand theater of Montevallo to play every Sunday afternoon. It doesn ' t matter what we play, just so it isn ' t Mon- sieur Beaucaire. Well, I could hardly help but be surprised when I dashed into the Junior parlor and saw a couple sitting on the same bench. Of course, the Matrons and Executive Board have always insisted that a bench was ample room — their point being to preserve the wear on so many chairs. We have never been pleased with this idea, and at a meeting in the depot next week, we decided to ask the officials to let dates sit as far separated as they like. You can imagine my relief when I saw that those in the parlor were not Juniors, but Faculty members. We had a class meeting and voted to give up Ramsay for next year and live in the Annex, since it is more convenient to the library. Every Junior has a school ring which was so kindly given her by the Seniors. The two heavenly guests were given a simple, but hearty welcome, and the ancient couple busily prepared such food as they had. During the meal the pitcher of wine, which was so small that it scarcely contained enough for one guest, was seen to replenish itself. Struck dumb with terror, the old couple were soon reassured by the gods, and were told to accompany them to the top of a nearby hill. Look- ing back they discovered that the entire village had been immersed into a lake and all destroyed save their own small house which had been changed into a temple of gold. Asked what favor they desired, both declared their wish to be guardians of the temple for the remainder of their lives, and that neither should live to see the other die. The prayer was granted. And when in course of time they stood one day together, Baucis saw Philemon begin to put on leaves and Philemon saw Baucis changing in like manner, and each bade the other farewell as they slowly changed into mag- nificent trees. w .. PROLOGUE HOUGH not the same apples, yet three golden ap- ples play a prominent part in the lives of Hercules and Atalanta, two grea t Athletes of Mythology. Hercules, hated by the goddess Juno, is com- pelled to attempt twelve great tasks, each intended for his destruction. The most famous is the search for the three golden apples in the garden of Hesperides whose location is unknown. In this adventure, Hercules encounters Nereus, a sea god who changes himself into many terrifying shapes ; wrestles with Anteus, who receives fresh strength each time he is thrown to earth; takes the place of Atlas, that weary Titan upholding the heavens, while Atlas in turn gets the ap- ples for Hercules. Atalanta, fearing wedlock, is besieged by many suitors, and agrees to race, with herself as prize to the successful one, but with death as penalty if she should win. Since many had failed, Hippomenes secured from Venus three golden apples and drops one of them when Atalanta, the swiftest of mortals, is about to pass him in the race. Astonished and curious, she stops to pick it up. As she rapidly overtakes him, a second apple is dropped and again she stops. Finally, as they near the goal, Hippome- nes tosses the last apple to one side and Atalanta (either for love of such amazing fruit, or the owner, or both) , stops and is defeated. i [ â– Ms s .. Well, where is the camp? just put on your oxfords, grab your bonnet and we ' ll go over there, tollow me out the back gate of the campus, cross the swinging bridge, go up hills and down hills until you come to a pretty green house sitting on the top of a hill amidst a clump of green trees. What is the purpose of this camp? It is a haven of rest for all classes and stages of intelligence. If you ever feel like throwing up your hands and screaming to the top of your voice, I ' m ready to quit trying, just get in with the gang on their way to the green house and all cares and worries will mysteriously vanish. How is anyone entertained at the camp? If you are interested in reading, much enjoyment can be obtained from reading magazines. But if you want to be a puddle duck, there is a shallow creek at the foot of the hill. Those who love and understand nature go on a stroll through the woods. Other pleasures may be gotten from music, playing games, dancing, etc., inside the camp. But the most exciting and enjoyable time at all is the time when we go to feed our faces. I should say we do have delicious food and lots of it, too. Who are our cooks? Well, it depends upon those who get hungry first. It is the Rats then who have to wash the dishes. 169 _ Athletic Board Officers Elizabeth Bryant President Bess Savage ... . . Vice-President Pauline McCord ... . . . . Secretary Elizabeth Ellis . ... Although already fabulously wealthy, Midas elects that what- ever he touches shall turn to gold. Though disappointed at the choice, Bacchus grants the wish. At first Midas is elated beyond measure as he watches the amazing change of twigs, pebbles and even the flowers in his garden into virgin gold, but is dismayed and alarmed to find that water when thirsty, and food when hungry, are likewise changed into gold. Then his little daughter, whom he loved even beyond his great wealth, is also transformed into the now hateful metal as she rushes unsuspecting into his arms. In agony, Midas prays to Bacchus, who mercifully bids him to wash in the nearby river, and whatever he then touches is transformed back to its original substance. L,i!:-,v KING MIDAS AND THE GOLDEN TOUCH â– - ' I The Golden Touch Wise King Midas, so they say. Wished for a golden touch one day. This was odd, one might recall — But Midas was not disconcerted at all. So he touched his gardens. His heart grew cold. But his touch was warm — his eyes Were l(cen As he saw the gold blushes that came from the green. Wise King Midas had a daughter, they say. He turned her to gold (she Was worth more that way). And the beautiful statue that she made Was a burnished Venus with eyes of jade. And, though he regretted her dismal pari. He had to admit that his daughter was art. Bui what would Midas, the wise km§ sa V If he saw the statues we offer today? r -=L.
