'P 'DO The monumental 1946 SAVITAR may or may not be a superb edition. According to Webster, there are many meanings for the Word monumental. This book falls under one of the classificationsg lasting and impressive. It shall be lasting because it portrays a year that cannot be forgotteng the transition from War to Peace. Just as school began in the fall of 1945, World War II came to an end. But the end had not yet been justified, and as recon- version was taking place across the world, change was the keynote at Columbia. This book is impressive because it combines and relates the talents of close to 6,000 students at the University of Missouri and tells of the atmosphere they have created. It is a good atmosphere, one that looks forward to the University of tomorrow. To dedicate this foreword to those persons with foresight would be super- fluousg to honor their ideas and aims with the presentation of this book is more suitable. THE EDITOR Columbia, Mo. 1946

f :J 'X lf, Dean F. F. Stephens, Capt. Sinclair of the NROTC, President Middlebush and Governor Donnelly review the Navy units stationed at the University between halves of the Nebraska-Missouri Navy Day football game at Memorial Stadium, October 27, 1945. Missouri University students, returning for their first peacetime school year since 1940, found in Sep- tember a revitalized campus of bigger crowds, longer lines, and more collegiate excitement than existed during the curtailed schedule of the war period. The peak enrollment figure of approximately 5,800 for the '45 and '46 semesters explained the throngs of people that filled fraternity and sorority houses, jammed residence halls, overflowed into trailer camps Cthese for the Vetsj, and made Gaebler's look like an Automat. Naturally, with this greater reservoir of man and woman power more things were accom- plished. Traditions were restored: the Memorial Stadium's M once again received its coat of white- wash and Homecoming created widespread excite- ment, Student Government drew a new deep breath and started off at a gallopg and dances, games, meet- ings, and pep rallies were made successful by a re- newed enthusiasm. A partial report of what went on this year is set down in facts and photos in the succeeding pages. Pagr 6 wi W uf' . ,if X QZUQJ '.-i':- W du-w. ' .-: i. .f N, .1 ,.. nd ,, , ,L 51? Q. no U' ,f ..,.
