oe Mantor + se To Mr. Theodore H. Fenske Recently Appointed Superintendent of the West Central School of Agriculture The Senior Class dedicates The 1939 Moccasin WEST CENTRAL’ During the Junior Livestock Show last November at South St. Paul a special edi- tion of the daily paper featured many of the exhibitors and included pictures of 4-H Club champions at former Shows. Among these was a picture of Theodore Fenske who exhibited the champion lamb from Beltrami County in 1924 when he was a 4-H Club boy. His record in club work was one of steady progress and advancement culminat- ing in high honors and achievements. It is needless to say that as he did excellent 4-H Club work so he will do the same kind of work at the West Central School and Station. As superintendent every stu- dent will learn to know him asa trusted counselor and friend because he has had those intimate experiences which make up the life of the average farm boy. He has an under- standing of their problems, their hopes and aspirations, and will have a personal inter- est in their success and achievements. Mr. Fenske will maintain the fine ideals of the West Central School and will strive to translate those ideals into the lives of the young people who are enrolled in the student body. RESIDENCE — ib RSH LAR © a $C o Oo Recently I saw a magazine article entitled, ““The Future of American Youth.’”’ No man can predict with any certainty the future of American Youth, or the youth of any other land. Undoubtedly one might point out possibilities or trends, but exact or detailed predictions are very likely to prove wrong. I am quite certain of one fact, however, and that is that there is still work to be done that needs doing in a better manner than it has ever been done before. Our present day philosophy seems to be toward a system of shorter hours and easier work for everyone. Before you make up your mind that such a philo- sophy will guarantee your personal success in life, may I suggest to you that up to the present time, the people who have achieved success in their particular fields have almost invariably done it through hard work. I have enjoyed my association with the members of the Class of 1939. You have contributed much to the school. May you continue to contribute to the welfare of the society in which you are to live. Charles Kent, THE JUNIOR CLASS It was evident on Registration Day that a large number of students had come to join the ranks of the Junior Class to take the place of those freshmen who did not return. The new- comers have not only added to the number of class members, but have provided a greater variety of talent which has helped the Junior Class establish a name for itself. One of the activities which arouses a great deal of interest in everyone in the fall is foot- ball. Members of the Junior Class were no exception. A larger number of juniors than usual won places on the squad, and five boys, James Flint, Leonard Fossum, Milton Nielsen, Orvie Underwood, and Ingvor Buhl, won letters in football. Those who were not included in the squad spent their efforts toward developing a Junior Class Team which furnished competi- Tf Aes ' RS? 2 t+ : gee 2 ie : : , rd 4 Ft £R @ f : ot, bes a _ Ada =] Leonard Fossum, President; Ingvor Buhl, Secretary; Miss Zellers, Class Adviser; Reynold Griess, Treasurer; GfiBert Dehne, Vice President; Mr. Prickett, Clasg Adviser. : i Pe tT Back Row—V. There are also some juniors who have won a place on the basketball squad. They are Axel Borresen, Milton Nielsen and Ingvor Buhl. The class has great hopes for its Junior Basketball Team, which they hope will make a good showing in the class basketball tourna- ment which will be held in March. The team has had an opportunity to get in some practice for this event by playing preliminary games. In the realm of public speaking, the juniors are represented by Leonard Fossum, Lester Huebner, Gilbert Dehne and Howard Eide, who are members of the school debate squad. These boys are working hard in the hope that they will have a chance to represent the school in the interscholastic debates which are held during the second semester. eee eS SAA hee Poa A WL iesesasesibnchatenitotelie or acne scent tbe Back Row—V. It is made up of approximately thirty girls and seventy boys, which makes it one of the largest groups enrolled as freshmen in the history of the school. Very soon after school began in the fall the freshmen called a meeting for the purpose of electing officers and the representatives on the various standing committees of the school. On the Social Committee the class is represented by Orin Toso and Beatrice Beninga; on the Religious Welfare Committee by Pearl Bosshardt and Harold Drever; and on the Athletic Committee by Mabel Monson and Hero Maertens. The freshmen lost no time in showing their determination to launch a successful career at West Central. The goal toward which they were striving was developing a team which could defeat the juniors in the annual football classic, the freshman-junior football game. This they suc- ceeded in doing, on November 7, to the tune of 14-0. The team was piloted by its captain, Harold Drever, who called the signals, and who, with many of his team-mates, will undoubted- ly furnish good material for future Aggie football teams. At the close of the football season, the freshmen athletes turned their attention to basket- ball. A large number have reported for this sport as well. From this group the team which will represent the class in the class tournament will be selected. One freshman, Harold Drever, has been chosen to play on the squad. Not all of the efforts of the freshmen have been expanded in athletics. During the months of October and November four freshmen made an average sufficiently high to place their Back Row—H. Olson, M. Although they will very likely fail to make the team this year, they will gain some valuable experience. Many others are taking an active part in the musical organizations in school. Others are members of the Rifle Club. Hero Maertens and Kathryn Kay represent the class on the Student Council. On December 16 the freshmen held a hard-time party in the Dining Hall, at which they demonstrated their ability as square dancers. Another social event of a similar nature is planned for the winter term. The Class of 1941 promises to be an active group who will make a decided contribution to the progress of the school within the next few years. THE SPECIAL CLASS Back Row—R. Jacobson, M. Burnett, I. It is the first governing body of its kind to be in existence at West Central. The Student Council came into being as a result of the conviction that there should be some central student organization which would have a voice in school government. | Another purpose was to bring students and faculty in closer contact. : Early in the fall term Superintendent Fenske and the presidents of the various | classes met and drew up the constitution and by-laws which were presented to the stu- | dent body at the next regular assembly meeting. There they met with the unani- | mous approval of the student body and were accepted in substantially the same form | as that in which they were presented by the committee. | Four members were then selected from each class. These names were put on one ballot. The student body selected the two representatives from each class from this ballot. The members elected to the Council are as follows: Special Class— Lillian Petersen and Leslie Campbell; Advanced Class—Dorothy Hanson and Dale Benson; Senior Class—Dolly Petersen and Stanley Block; Junior Class—Mable Olson and James Flint; Freshman Class—Kathryn Kay and Hero Maertens. A meeting was conducted November 3 to elect officers. James Flint was elected President; Stanley Block, Vice-President; and Dorothy Hanson, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. A. W. Edson was selected as the faculty adviser by the Council members. Regu- lar meetings of the Student Council are conducted the first Wednesday of every month. The activities of the Student Council are varied. The first project undertaken by this organization was the editing and publishing of the school news. Many other activities have been taken over by the Council such as the supervision of the skating rink and the sponsorship of assembly programs. ‘“‘MUSIC HATH CHARMS .... .”’ A great number of musically talented stu- dents report each semester for participation in the musical organizations. 'The Mixed Chorus is always an asset to the Music Department. From this group are selected a Boys’ Quartette and a Mixed Quartette. These groups appear on various assembly and out-of-town programs. During the fall term the Mixed Quartette had the opportunity of appearing on a radio pro- gram which was broadcasted over the Fargo Station. The presence of the band at football games added much spirit to these occasions. The choral groups are under the direction of Miss O’Connor and the instrumental organi- zations under that of Mr. Anderson. THE MIXED QUARTETTE E. Cook, R. Schlattman, H. Eide, D. In the first game of the season the alumni furnished the opposition. The twenty former players who returned for this event proved to be too strong for our boys, who were badly outclassed and came out with the short end of a 14-0 score. On the following Friday the Freshman Team from Concordia College played our team in the second game of the season. Very much heavier than our boys, they pushed the Aggies all over the field by force. Three touchdowns in the first half and three more in the second half brought the score to 39-0. The homecoming game was played against the boys from the Agricultural School of Curtis, Nebraska. The Corn-Huskers made one touchdown after another against our team. The boys were fast and hard to tackle, and succeeded in running up a score of 63 against our boys. Back Row—Mr. Heine, Coach; I. In the first quarter neither team scored, but the boys from Crookston took a sudden spurt in the second quarter and made four touchdowns. In the second half the Aggie team made two touchdowns to Crookston’s one, and the boys were forced to return to the cam- pus without Ossie. The Grand Rapids team came here determined to give us a hard battle. Our team, too, was set on winning. Both teams played clean, hard football, and the result was an interesting game to watch. Morris made a touchdown in the first quarter and another in the last four minutes of play. Grand Rapids made one in the last quarter, and the game ended Morris 13 and Grand Rapids 6. Our team wound up the season by defeating the Morris High School 20-6, with the Aggies making three touchdowns and converting three extra points. The high school scored one touchdown. 1. Coach Heine looks over the 1938 recruits. 2. Our team swings into action against Concordia. 3. Plenty of action in the homecoming game. Aggie fans take in the game. Nebraska Jack Rabbits hop away with the victory. “We will fight, fight, fight if we lose.”’ Captain Hugo Parson. We wind up the season by defeat- ing the Morris High School. “Hip, hip, hooray! We’re out to win today.”’ Truman Hagen, student manager. ent Se SBT a Non THE JUNIOR TEAM Back Row—L. Koehler, V. Mead. Second Row—J. Schroeder, R. Rattelmiller, H. Anderson, M. Johnson, W. OIVA SIIRA Junior Captain The great event of the year is the clash between the Freshman and Junior Football Teams. The entire student body and all of the faculty members turn out on this occasion. This year the game was played on November 7. It started out with the freshmen kicking off to the juniors, who ran the ball back to the 50-yard line. The yearlings were set on winning the game. They hammered the junior line for three consecutive first downs. Then they worked a reverse which baffied the juniors who let the freshmen run unmolested for a touchdown. The freshmen also made their extra point, making the score 7-0. This acted as an incentive for the juniors, who proceeded to get the ball to the freshman l1-yard line, but lost the ball on downs. The freshmen kicked to the 40-yard line, out of dan- ger. Then the juniors against lost the ball on downs. At that point the whistle sounded, end- ing the first half.
