Jack gives the word O eptember -- another summer gone; the arrival of fall and the latest additions to Metawampe ' s family. In a maze of tours, tests and entertainment, the University ' s newest class (with the Handbook as a constant travel- ling companion) was given a brief and hurried view of campus activity. The flurry of events ended with that twice-a-year headache. Registration, which was followed by a dance in the Cage, the only event of the week-end to which frosh were advised not to bring their Handbook. As a fellow freshman, Provost McCune welcomed the Class of 1959 at a time when there were some im- portant changes taking place at the University of Mass- achusetts.

Eyes front! Many organizational changes had in fact taken place in the University during the summer. The former School of Agriculture and Horticulture had become the College of Agriculture with three new departments added to it. Stowell C. Goding had been appointed head of the Ro- mance Language Department, replacing Charles F. Fraker, who, after years of distinguished service, had retired in August. Maxwell H. Goldberg had become chairman of the English Department, succeeding Frank Prentice Rand who had resigned to continue as a pro- fessor in his department. Dr. Goldberg advocated evolu- tionary rather than revolutionary changes in the teaching of English. It was decided that, in gradual stages, the Speech Department would become a separate unit.
