IN DEDICATION Nineteen fifty-five dedicates its Index to Professor Lawrence Dickinson. This dedication is a recognition of his long service in the interest of the Academic Activities program of the Univeisity. It is an appreciation of his friendly and helpful relationship with generations of students working on the Index, Collegian, and other similar organizations. It all started back in the 1920s when Professor Dickinson began to keep the financial records for the Academic Activities Board. He took great pride in this work and the efficiency of his office. He enjoyed his contacts with student managers. They, in turn, liked him and profited by his sound business judgment and advice. The program prospered and expanded to the extent that last year he became the financial adviser for all Recognized Student Organizations, over one hundred in number. While Professor Dickinson was expanding this service, he was pioneering in another field — that of fine turf management. After his graduation from the University in 1910 he served as Superintendent of Grounds. This work naturally led him to the problems of turf management, especially those relating to lawn and golf course maintenance. In 1927 he organized a ten weeks Greenskeepers course, the first of its kind. This has become the outstanding Golf Grounds Management Course in the country and Professor Dickinson the leading authority in the teaching of Golf Course Maintenance. His students have been drawn from the whole United States and foreign countries. In recognition of his outstanding contribu- tion in this field the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America on the 25th anniversary of the starting of this program honored him with a certificate of commendation and a very substantial gift of money. Loyal alumnus, outstanding teacher, and organizer in a new field of education, ardent champion of students and student organizations, this is the man 1955 honors with this Index dedication. M. O. L.
