SEPTEMBER A furious wind carried the sound of creaking trunks, diesel engines, the put-put of old jalopies and the purring of new motors, sniffles from freshman mothers, and general confusion. Foot- ball players were once more given exer- cise as they carried trunks and duffle- bags to the vacant rooms. The carefree summer days had van- ished. The tours were over, the camp season was through, the summer jobs had ended. Moonlit nights along the beach, swimming in fresh water ponds, basking in the warm sun, dancing, laughter, all of these were just a mem- ory. With mixed emotions we watched the silent walls of the University enfold the students for another year of campus life. The carefully laid plans for Freshman Week were waiting for the novices. Freshmen boys resigned themselves to beanies, and freshmen girls donned hats and bibs. Jumping over numbers provided freshmen with exercise care- fully supervised by Scrolls and INlaroon Key members. The freshman square dance, the co-ed play day, a hubbub of other events oriented our new friends to campus life. Then the much dreaded day came round. We knew it; we fought it; we had to face it. Armed with a good night ' s sleep and a host of convincing alibis we marched bravely into the cage for (dare we say it?) REGISTRA- TION. Lines, lines, and more lines of suft ' ering humanity greeted our stal- wart gaze. We received our little pink cards and courageously plunged into the fray. There was the enemy, seated behind wooden desks. The problem lay before us. We must get our little white cards to the opposition without letting them realize it. A beautiful mass of confusion ended as we left, dis- gruntled, with classes from eight to four. Adelphia and Isogon tried to pla- cate us with a registration dance on an enlarged cage floor. Before we had been on campus for more than a week we discovered that sleeping quarters had become a little tight. Two-hundred and twenty more Shaking hands with royalty
