The dramatic announce- ment was made at the first University Honors Convocation ever to be held on this campus. At this impressive meeting, attended en masse by the University, Jean Paul Mather announced his ap- pointment to become the fourteenth president of the University of Massa- chusetts. The young former Provost was greeted with a round of applause, as the students recognized in him an ally, a liberal thinker whom, they felt, would help to correct many of the out- moded practices which still lingered. This Honor Convocation proved so successful that another worthwhile tra- dition was established. Awards were given to those stvidents who had spent a great deal of time and effort and who had proved outstanding in their differ- ent organizations. During the course of the evening, members of Scrolls, Ma- roon Key (the two Sophomore Honor Societies) Isogon and Adelphia (the alioii, folks, we watch the Naiads drown

Make way for laughter-at -large ! Suddenly the humor, the fvm, the frolic died out, and solemnity appeared on the scene. two Senior Honor Societies) were tap- ped. The Senior girls decked out in their caps and gowns marched to the College Pond followed by the students who attended the convocation. The college pond was alight with the reflec- tion of candles slipping through the water to the accompaniment of music and feminine voices, to the juniors waiting on the other shore. Toward the middle of the month the annual ROTC review was scheduled. Carol Bruinisman, this year ' s Honorary Colonel, was present at the exercises, looking strangely difl erent from any other colonel that the military had on the field. With her presence, the neat review certainly added a lovely note. Suddenly the future reared its head, becoming all-important as plans were made for commencement. The students who had worked for four years for the exciting culmination of their dreams waited anxiously for Their Week to begin. The future held for them a senior banquet, a senior picnic, the soph-senior hop, the baccalaureate, and the graduation exercise itself. The speaker secured to speak at the com- mencement services was Dr. Leonard Carmichael, the Secretary of the Smith- sonian Institution. However, almost before anyone could enjoy all these happy events, the Plague was upon them. A blanket of silence fell over the campus. The girls put on their Bermudas and their glasses; the campus settled down for a week and a half of studying. Oh, May, whither didst thou flee?
