MASSACHUSETTS STATE COLLEGE It was inevitable that a new university should feel the pangs of growth. The campus groaned under the load of an enlarged student body, an increased faculty, a list of new courses. It teemed with the sound of new construction which meant greater facilities. With the deter- mination to live up to a new name came the realization that changes could not occur in one year. Massachusetts State College became the University of Massachusetts and with the change came the hope of a greater future through expansion.

1948 brought an 85th birthday phis a new name — the University of Massachusetts — to this gentleman who is an institution. Born in 1863 by the provisions of the Morrill Act, he is looking forward to a long life made great by further expansion. Old Chapel— 1857
