FACULTY HONOR SOCIETIES SIGMA XI A society dedicated to science and to the encour- agement of scientific research is Sigma Xi. Members are graduate stvidents and faculty members elected on demonstrated abilitj to carry on research. Marks are no criterion. Originally founded at Cornell in 1886, the chapter at the University of Massachusetts had its inception in 1938. Four meetings are held yearly at which public lectures are given by prominent scientists. Meetings were held this year in January, February, March, and April. PHI BETA KAPPA While llic University does not have a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, there does exist on campus a cer- tain group of faculty elected to the honorary society elsewhere who banded together under the late Pro- fessor Patterson in 1932 to encourage liberal scholar- ship on the campus. The society meets together three times a year. At its most recent meeting a long discussion of the new liberal arts curriculum at Amherst College was held. President Charles W. Cole of Amherst being the guest speaker. It is the hope of the members that in the near future an undergraduate chapter may be established. In the meanwhile, the association nominates a Phi Beta Kappa Scholar from each year ' s graduating class. OFFICERS President: Dr. Gilbert L.
