TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1948 You are beyond question one of the most unusual classes ever graduated from this Uni- versity. Your wide variation in age and experience is something new. The seriousness and the energy with which you have approached your studies have set a record. With the other students in American colleges in your time, you have upset completely the thinking of the American people as to who can benefit from a college education and we stand at the beginning of a new era in education in this country. Your college generation has made it perfectly clear that facilities for higher education must be tremendously expanded as rapidly as such growth can be accomplished if we are to meet the pressing needs of Ameri- can Youth. These are stirring times in the educational world. You have played your part well in helping to bring about this new attitude toward higher education. You are leaving the University in a period of unprecedented development. New build- ings that are past the planning stage will increase classrooms by fifty percent and double the number of laboratories. New courses are being added and older courses strengthened. Whatever changes may come, this will still be your University. Nothing but time and your own indifference can steal your memories of the campus and its associations. We hope you will renew them all by frequent visits and that you will always have a live interest in what is happening here. Ralph A. Van Meter Acting President
